Patti is going on tour with a new show- A Life With Notes

Music has the power to crystallize a moment in time and evoke eras. In her new concert, Patti LuPone: A Life in Notes, the three-time Tony Award winner performs an array of songs that are touchstones and reflections on her life growing up in America. The songs range from her youth during the burgeoning rock ‘n’ roll scene of the 1950s, to coming of age in the politically and socially turbulent ’60s, to eventually achieving success with both career and family.

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

I saw her second performance in Jersey.  It was underwhelming. She mostly sings pop songs that were important to her growing up.  Starts Act 2 with On Broadway, and goes through her standards; Dont cry for me Argentina, anything goes, I dreamed a dream, ladies who lunch.  There was a song that she dedicated to aids victims (kind of life Madonnas concert), and she did three love songs from three different decades. One of them was Time after Time by Cyndi lauper.  It was nice, she’s still in mostly good voice, but it was kind of sleepy.  Oh there was her long time music director on piano and someone playing strings.

Interesting. It seems like it's going to be the exact same concert at Carnegie Hall in a few weeks from the description and the list of performers. I will adjust my expectations.

VintageSnarker, you're going to adjust your expectations on something you haven't seen or experienced yet?

With my expectations appropriately calibrated, I mostly had a good time. I wasn't expecting all showstopping numbers so I could enjoy the varied program and the moments she took to thrill the audience. I do think there was too much singing... in the sense that she could have included more patter and sung fewer, more challenging songs. It also didn't feel like she had a chance to "act" most of the songs because of the relentless jukebox pace of most of the evening. Bridget Everett was a fun surprise.

I ended up liking the arrangements quite a bit though I could only see the piano player and Patti from my seat. Everyone was leaning forward in the balcony and the tall man in front of me wore a baseball cap and also leaned his head on his hand so my view was fully blocked most of the time unless I also leaned forward. Even leaning forward, I could not see the right side of the stage at all.
