It's thirty years this week since Sinéad O'Connor ripped up a photo of the Pope on SNL. Why was it such a big deal? Not everybody is Catholic. What was so bad that even an arena full of Bob Dylan fans booed her?
She did not deserve that. Anybody here remember this time and how they themselves reacted?
This new Showtime documentary looks good.

I remember it well. I was a sophomore at Fordham University and watched it with my roommate (a straight guy who first made me realize I was gay, but that's a story for another day).
Anyhow, we were both Catholics at the time (we're both decidedly not Catholics now), and we called NBC to complain. One of the many little things in my young adulthood that I wish I hadn't done.
Not long after that I came to understand the years of institutional abuse that led to O'Connor's act of protest. If I was given such a forum to condemn the sins of my former church, I'd do the same.
Thank you, that's interesting. I imagine a lot of people would think differently today. Don't feel too bad, though, it might have hurt her career but Sinéad says that, long term, it was actually healthier for her to get out of the spotlight. She might not even still be here if she had needed to keep up the pressures of "success" and fame.
I keep meaning to read her book from last year, but I did hear her give interviews.

Whether you are Catholic or not, the Pope holds a certain reverence around the world, and demands respect (whether you believe in what he and the Catholic Church stands for, or not). It's the same with QE2 - she holds a certain reverence around the world, and demands respect whether you believe in the monarchy and what it stands for or not. And we've seen how she was revered and respected this past month with the news of her death and her funeral (please don't tell me all those people who attended the viewing were all proponents of the monarchy and what she stood for - most on television admitted they weren't. Yet they were respectful.)
Same with Buddah.
So if O'Connor stood there and ripped up a picture of Queen Elizabeth II or Buddah, she would most likely get the same reception from the public and be further ostracized from the public like she did in 1992.
The pope demands respect? He "demands" a lot of things. One being that women are treated as second-class citizens. Why should Sinéad respect her oppressor?

The Pope wsa complicit in mass child sex abuse and the only thing Queen Elizabeth served was colonialism and her delusion she was aopointed by god.
Sinead O'Conor demands more respect than the two of them combined.

Finally got around to "reading" her book, Rememberings. On audiobook. Read by Sinéad herself. Obviously even sadder now, but happy moments too. Prince was a moron. Oh, Sinéad, you should still be here.
