Anyone else catch this? Not a big Fallon fan, but watched to see what Spacey had to say about the Tonys and got this interesting announcement of him doing a 2 night run as Clarence Darrow at Arthur Ashe Stadium of all places!

Floor seats are $395 - $2500, Courtside $150-$200 and the loge (aka the boondocks) are $89.  At 23,000 capacity, I would have thought that reasonable pricing options would be available.  I know many school kids will get comped but between the price and potential view from a seat I could afford, I'll pass.

I'll stay home (in Queens) and rewatch Beyond the Sea.

I noticed on ticketmaster that some of the seats need a Broadway Box code ($150 ticket for $59).  Is anyone else seeing this discount? And does anyone have the code?

I have been to the  US Open several times and the upper level is really high but guess it is no worse than seeing a concert in a baseball stadium.

This is utterly bizarre.

Agreed.

I wish he would have done this in a traditional Broadway house.

I agree that this is a bizarre and ill-fated idea and the ticket prices are absurd. One tiny correction, though--they're not selling the uppermost tier of Ashe, so the worst views (and a few thousand seats) aren't in contention. That said, I still can't imagine that demand for this would be high enough to even sell out one night at much lower prices. Time will tell!

I saw this in London in The Old Vic - when he was about 10 feet away from me. Can't imagine this working in a huge arena. The whole show is literally just him with a bit of audience interaction. Maybe because he loves tennis so much somebody owes him a favour but yes it does seem really weird.

I just got back from this evening's performance, and I liked it a lot. I'm sure it helped that I splurged for an excellent discounted floor seat ($179), but it seemed to me like a solid play with a better-than-average Spacey performance.

Even though I had a good seat, I went up to the worst seats (that were being sold) to see how bad the view would be and, surprisingly to me, they didn't seem any worse than the back of the balcony at New York City Center. In addition, there were many more good seats than I was expecting. Also, I thought Spacey and his director made great use of the entire floor area and even the risers, allowing large parts of the audience to be much closer to certain segments of the show without (as far as I could tell) losing the other parts.

The main weaknesses, in my opinion, were: 1) somewhat bad acoustics -- although I heard every word without problem, the sound was overly echoey and the planes were a constant annoyance; 2) the last segment, about Leopold & Loeb, was set up in too perfunctory a manner -- the anti-capital punishment plea was neither as stirring nor as challenging as it might have been, because we learned so little about the child-murdering defendants and couldn't even look at flesh and blood human beings (just two empty chairs where they were supposedly sitting); and 3) this performance felt like what it arguably was, in effect -- a second preview -- and even though I thought Spacey's performance was first-rate, I could easily see it being even better with more rehearsal.

Overall, the audience seemed both enthusiastic and attentive. Perhaps it had something to do with the mix of subject-matter and sporting venue, but I can't think of any other theater performance that featured so many during-the-show cheers and ovations. Also, at the end of the evening, the standing ovation was immediate, enthusiastic and prolonged, and I happily joined it. Once it died down, Spacey invited a few dozen young students in the audience up onstage to take a group photo with him.

I appreciate that if nothing else, he tried something different. If we want more people to experience live theatre, we should encourage more experimentation ... in venues and productions, not less. Innovation is all about trying a lot of stuff to learn what works.

It would've been a great idea to open up the whole stadium and have much lower prices at $10 or something, obviously more expensive closet up. How was the capacity?
