Which Broadway legends are due for a Kennedy Center Honor?

I was thinking of Jack O'Brien, Harvey Fierstein and Patti Lupone.

i was curious about the criteria for the KCH. Per the link above there really is no specific criteria other than "excellence." And, as I knew, that you have to be there in person.

I am never clear re eligibility of foreigners for this honor.  Obviously, some  (though not a huge number) have won, but I am not sure what the rules are.  In any event...

Stephen Schwartz

Shirley MacLaine

Sally Field

Jane Fonda (but it'll never happen)

Vanessa Redgrave (if eligible...even if, it'll probably never happen)

Maggie Smith (if eligible...I suspect she'd turn it down)

Andrew Lloyd Webber (if eligible)

Elton John (if eligible)

The Rolling Stones (if eligible)

Glenn Close (4 Emmys, 3 Tonys, 6 Oscar nominations)

(Controversial with this group) Bernadette Peters

Rosemary Harris seems a very good candidate to me...I had not thought of her...I am betting that it won't happen.  Although prolific, it is largely in the theatre and she has not actually been in many hits in which she was the central character).

Too Young Yet, but inevitable:

Tom Hanks

Nathan Lane

Denzel Washington

Patti Lupone

Question:

Will people turn it down while Trump is president, if his childish and nasty tweeting continues, and he starts doing things that are too right leaning, particularly vis-a-vis human rights issues?

Irene Dunne was not present to receive her KCH during Reagan's term, due to illness.

I'm curious if honorees will decline the award while Trump is POTUS, based on how the entertainment community is reacting to his being elected. The President has nothing to do with who is chosen to be honored, but he does host the honorees at the White House and they sit with him during the ceremony at the Kennedy Center.

Not a Broadway person, but how has Cher been overlooked for so long?

Thanks,  I can't believe I didn't remember that.  I really thought Tom Hanks needed a few more years under his belt...guess I was wrong.  Since I have always liked MacLaine, I am disappointed that I didn't see that...I imagine it might be available on You Tube.

I strongly disagree re Liza.  To me, she burned out 30 years ago, if not more.  Between her diva behavior and her squandered talent, I don't see it. And I really used to be a huge fan...rushed to see her in Chicago, endured The Act and The Rink, Winter Garden, hell even the Garden States Art Center.  I am probably the only person who ever said this, but  I can't even sit through her straight scenes in Cabaret, although the musical numbers are great.  (Yes, she won the Oscar, but 1972 was among the handful of worst years for actresses EVER).

Cher is an interesting one, as is Bette Midler, who I don't think has one.  She would certainly be helped by spectacular personal reviews for Dolly.

Francis Coppola is long overdue.

But I'm wondering if anyone will be accepting these things in the coming horror years.

Billy Joel already got one in 2013.  There are lists available online of who has received the honor to date.

I would brace yourselves for the likes of Ted Nugent, Scott Baio, Phil Robertson, and Omarosa to receive these awards over the next four years during the upcoming horror show. Most actors will (rightly) want nothing to do with the incoming "president."

Here is a list I found online. It's from a few years back so some have since died and are thus no longer eligible, and some have been honored since it was published, i.e., Lily Tomlin.

I like the idea of Woody Allen, especially since he is a crossover artist from standup to Broadway to film, and as an actor, writer, musician, and director. I imagine he's been considered and perhaps asked but probably declined, as he typically eschews award shows. Or maybe he is "damaged" following the Mia Farrow/Soon Yi Previn thingy.

The President apparently has no role whatsoever in "selecting" the honorees. The Kennedy Center Board does it, along with past winners.  But yes, they do come to the WH for a little festivity beforehand and sit in his box the night of...

From the Kennedy Center Honors website (emphasis mine):

"The Kennedy Center Honors provide recognition to living individuals who throughout their lifetimes have made significant contributions to American culture through the performing arts. The primary criterion is excellence, and artistic achievement in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures, and television is considered."
