I am thrilled to post that All Star Productions will open its 2017 season at its Off West End venue Ye Old Rose and Crown Theatre, Walthamstow, with the world premiere of MY LAND’S SHORE, a musical with music and lyrics by Christopher J. Orton and book and lyrics by myself. The show has been in development for around 12 years, was work-shopped by a West End cast in 2013 and was a finalist for the inaugural MTA Stiles and Drewe Mentorship Award earlier this year. A tale of conflict, social injustice, moral dilemmas, guilt, love and heartbreak, set during the infamous Merthyr Rising of 1831, it focuses on the story of the first Welsh working class martyr, Richard Lewis (aka Dic Penderyn).
A Studio Cast Recording of highlights from the score was released by SimG Records in February 2012 and George Stiles and Anthony Drewe wrote that “Orton and Gould have written a soaring, passionate and hauntingly melodic score”, while Caroline Sheen commented: “The show has grit, panache, melody and a big future – a musical for Wales and hopefully the world!”
For its first professionally staged production, the creative team will be headed by director Brendan Matthew, musical director Aaron Clingham and choreographer Charlotte Tooth, all of whom were nominated for Off West End Awards for their work on Howard Goodall and Charles Hart’s “The Kissing Dance”. Casting will be by Benjamin Newsome. The production will run from 7 to 26 February 2017, with a press night on 10 February.
