I haven't seen any promotion for it

I saw a bunch of ads for it during the Atlanta premiere on Tuesday, but none of them were very descriptive. I believe this season is called AHS: The Mist and it is shorter than previous seasons.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

There is no theme yet; they are intentionally obfuscating all details.

I hated Freak Show and gave up on Hotel after 3 episodes.  I'll wait for this one to complete its run before I consider starting it.  There show has been on a consistent decline since season 2.

as with all of Ryan Murphy's shows, there is just no clear direction. They start off promising but soon turn to absolute nonsense.

NOTHING could be worse than that FREAK HOTEL crap--but maybe ??

I loved freak show, but could not watch hotel(though that's more because I never had time to watch it)

the idea of this season sounds intriguing. Though it makes me scares Ryan Murphy will be ditching this series in favor of Scream Queens. So how much longer does AHS have?

I agree with everyone here.  Hotel is where they lost me, and even Freak Show was a little iffy for me.  Hoping this season will be better, I really enjoyed the first few seasons of this show even though it was super weird.  And is scream queens really that popular that Murphy would choose that over AHS?  I didn't watch the whole first season of scream queens but it just seemed like a train wreck to me. Im surprised it actually made it to a second season.

Anyone have any idea why the characters who narrate the story are diffferent than the ones who play them in  the actual story?

It's the framing device, the actual people doing interviews while actors are reenacting the events. It's common in crime & supernatural documentary shows.

Just finished and I was really no into it at first, but once it found its groove and the interviews became less intrusive and more just voice overs I was able to enjoy it a lot more.

What I don't get is why they insisted on the secrecy when the truth was one of the earliest rumors we heard about the Roanoke Colony.

I LOVED it!!! Didn't care for hotel at all; didn't finish the season because it was so lame and I honestly didn't enjoy freak show but watched it anyway. Loved everything about this premiere though. Had me sitting at the edge of my seat nearly the entire time!

So here's the thing. It wasn't "good", but it wasn't the absolute incomprehensible sh*t show that the other past few seasons have been (although I have no doubt it'll get there, just give it a week or two). It seems like this year, Murphy finally decided to watch a horror movie and learn a thing or two about the genre. The problem is that his script reads like a horror movie edited for TV. He just doesn't know how to find that happy medium needed for television.

When Paulson walks down the hall and sees two girls (ghosts? who knows, they're not mentioned again) walk in front of her and then she just says "Is anyone there?" I wanted to throw my shoe through my TV. YES. Someone is there. You JUST SAW THEM. Like, not even from the corner of your eye, they were right in front of you. Then you go and decide to take a glass of wine and relax in the jacuzzi instead of calling the police or running away? You kind of deserve whatever happens to you then. And that's my other issue with the series - it's Murphy's total disinterest in writing characters with any common sense whatsoever. I don't care who you are, if someone attempts to murder you, you don't stay there. Things like this can work in a film where the constraints of two or so hours are on your side and the character might have no choice but to stay until morning or so, but when you draw it out over the course of 13 hours - little sympathy can be had for whatever happens to you from that point on.

Just watched the first episode. I'm not in love with it, but I liked it enough to tune in again next week. I know we obviously haven't met all of the characters  yet, but once again Angela Bassett kept me interested (as she did in Hotel).

i thought season 1 was fantastic, season 2 was pretty good, season 3 i loved (maybe because it's the gayest one), season 4 i liked and season 5 i saw the first episode and hated it so much i didn't continue. i'll consider watching this in a few weeks to see if there's any consistency week-to-week.

I got the exact opposite impression, actually. That the "film" was a mockumentary with the actors pretending they were giving interviews for a documentary, and the other storyline was what actually happened.

Not great, but the show is never great. There are, however, great moments in every episode of the series so far that make it great semi-viewing.

Variety interpreted it as Rabe being the real Shelby, while Paulson reenacted the story, if that helps. It was very confusing. It also feels like it removes a bit of the suspense, should anyone be left dangling before death. They have to survive if they are there to do the interviews.

That said, I didn't hate it, either. It wasn't the best show I have ever seen, but it did give me a good jump when Bates appeared in the road suddenly. Blair Witch scared the **** out of me when it was first released. I didn't sleep for days. So, this particular line of fright appealed to me, ridiculousness aside. Now, the question is can they remain there? It was much closer to "horror" than previous seasons.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

It clearly says "re-enactment" on the screen when they first cut to Paulson and Gooding Jr. so there's not a lot of room for interpretation unless they pull out some dumb twist. So I guess every season of AHS is a variation of a haunted house? Got it.

I missed the re-enactment shot, I guess. It took me a bit to realize what was going on.

Ray, although it clearly said dramatic re-enactment during the opening Paulson/Gooding Jr scene I'm guessing that there will indeed be a twist with the documentary aspect of the show. Namely, I think it will turn out the documentary will be a mockumentary of sorts with the Paulson cast being the REAL characters and the Rabe cast being the actors hired to play them for a tv special. Remember Paulson's tv psychic character from Murder House and Hotel? I wouldn't be surprised if she hired Rabe, et al for her tv show of the case of the missing couple at Roanoke. I think there's still a chance Paulson and crew are dead.

As for the premiere- I loved it! For the first time in three seasons the show actually served up some scares. They also trimmed the focus and actually told a story instead of creating atmosphere that goes nowhere for 60 minutes. Imagine- telling a story in the premiere of a tv season! This IS a foreign concept to Murphy, so let's give him props where they're due.

Why wasn't Gaga in the closing credits? Is she just a special guest star this season?

I hated Coven- was frustrated with Freak Show and actually came to enjoy certain aspects of Hotel; Denis O'Hare had one of the best AHS characters ever in season five. Can't we all just celebrates the positives like no Emma Roberts this season? Ha

I'm confused about lack of Matt Bomer and Lady Gaga in the closing credits as well. I thought Finn Wittrock was coming back as well? Well, hopefully we to learn about the other characters sooner than episode 6.

I loved Coven, that was by far my favorite season, following by Haunted House, I didn't care much for 2,4 or 5 - they were all to distracted and had far too many unexplained subplots even after the finale.

I read somewhere (sorry, can't remember where) that Gaga was just going to be a guest star for a couple episodes. So this makes sense.
