As thanks to the members of this board who helped me with London theatre advice here is a quick roundup of the shows I saw on the summer trip in June/July!
1) In The Heights @ Kings Cross
Felt disappointed by the show. I thought the choreography was overwrought, the lyrics were very difficult to hear, the costumes did not suit the characters, and I felt that several performances were overwrought.
Rating - 2/5
2) Show Boat @ New London
A absolutely glorious revival of a classic musical. It was my first experience with the show and I was suitably impressed by the singing, the dancing and the set. The songs were delightful, the story poignant and I really enjoyed myself. My one qualm was the amplification of the orchestra - it was too loud!
Rating - 4/5
3) The Suicide @ National Theatre
Loved the show! Thought it was a biting political satire and found many moments hilarious. Thought the writing was quick, witty, and funny. The acting was great and I loved the large ensemble cast. The set was jawdropping in technical brilliance - with levels rising and dropping and moving. I was very impressed and had a great time.
Rating - 4/5
4) The Invisible Hand @ Tricycle Theatre
Powerful piece of drama, and a great theatre. A gripping storyline and masterfully acted. I thought it addressed and discussed very important issues in our day and age, without being too preachy and in a unbiased way.
Rating - 5/5
5) The Threepenny Opera @ National Theatre
I loved this show! It was funny and clever, the set was again fantastic, and it didn't look too cheap! I thought the adaptation captured the original very well , but updated it well enough. The inclusion of Surabaya Johnny was stunning, and unlike others, I didn't really register the amount of swearing. I did get lost near the end as things got less understandable. But enjoyed Surabaya Johnny, Mack the Knife and the Jealousy Duet! Thought that Pirate Jenny didn't work so well. Loved Rosalie Craig, Rory Kinnear, Hadyn Gwynne and Mr. Peachum (sorry, the name of the actor escapes me).
