I am just back from 4 nights and 6 shows (The Color Purple, Waitress, Hamilton, She Loves Me, Dear Evan Hansen and Daddy Long Legs)!  Next trip is in October and I am thinking I could start planning now if there are some MUST see shows that I need to put on my show card!  I'm sad I missed some great plays and am not quite sure how I ended up with all musicals this month, but they were all wonderful so I am not complaining!  I purchased all of the tickets well in advance and am glad I did because most of them would have impossible to get at the last minute.

Any recommendations for something playing now that will still be around in October?  Or recommendations for something that is opening in the fall that should be on my radar?  I should have up to 6 slots in October.  Thanks for helping me compile a list!

Many of the fall shows haven't been announced yet.

The shows I'm most anticipating are Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812Falsettos, and Cats.

Holiday Inn will be at Roundabout (not sure which theater), and I have high hopes for that, in addition to watch CupidBoy has said.

I'm not sure about the dates for Photograph 51 with Nicole Kidman are, but that play got great reviews in London (and she got awards love for it, too).

Many shows that are open now will have closed by then, and for the most part no one has seen the shows that will open between now and October. I would hold off on making definite plans. However, I am looking forward to Natasha, Pierre... and Falsettos.

I'm in the same boat as you (from CA and visiting NY in the fall). My list is tentative, but I'm pretty sure it will go something like this: Natasha, Pierre..., The Front Page, Fiddler, Cats, The Color Purple, Shuffle Along, and School of Rock. And Sleep No More, which I must see again.

The cast, obviously, is a little up in the air but I wouldn't miss "Shuffle Along," the best musical I saw when I was just in New York (and, yes, I saw "Hamilton" and "Dear Evan Hansen," both of which I also loved).

Ditto on Falsettos and The Comet (in previews when you go?).  I'm going in November and I also have short-listed Cats and Singin in the Rain depending on reviews etc.

For plays, The Front Page should be running by then?  John Slattery, John Goodman and Nathan Lane.  I'm really looking forward to that one.

Thanks for the great ideas!  I will start researching all of them and wait for more news on what is coming up.

Off my own topic, but when you see a lot of shows in a long weekend, how do you find time to eat and drink?  I found myself without enough time to eat a relaxing meal at dinner, so I settled for take-out or beef jerky, peanuts and fruit in between a matinee and evening show.  I didn't even have time to drink the bottle of wine I bought.   I lost three pounds and walked for miles.  Seeing shows is a good diet and fitness program?!

I never struggle to eat on a 2-show day. Matinees are out by 5:45-ish and evening shows don't start until 8. If you stay in the theater district, that's plenty of time to sit down in any of the restaurants over on 8th or 9th, as long as you pick on that has seating right away. What else is there to do for the 2 hours? haha

When my friends and I do our New York weekends we hardly even eat in the theater district. On Saturdays matinees are out by 5 and evening shows usually aren't until 8. So we'll grab a 5:30 reservation somewhere and still have 2 full hours to eat. You can get to Times Square in 20 minutes or less on the subway from a lot of neighborhoods with much more enticing dinner options (to me) than Times Square. Once you get the subway system down, it's easy to find fun places to get in no time.

When I'm by myself or with my family (who likes to be leisurely) or if I have a Sunday night show (since matinees are usually later) I'll often go over to 9th. I usually combine Yelp and open table to figure out what's around. One of my favorite places I found through Yelp is Bea--just went there last night for an after theater drink and snack. Or sometimes if I'm by myself I like to sit at the bar a junior's. Good diner food and you can usually chat with people sitting at the bar. (Almost always friendly. Sometimes cool. Sometimes weird. :))

Similar to other posters, we typically go from a matinee to dinner in Hell's Kitchen - there is a great selection of restaurants along 9th Ave between 42nd and 53rd. Dinner doesn't usually take too long, and we usuAlly also have time to freshen up in our hotel room (we stay in the theater district since we travel primarily to see shows) before heading out to our evening performance in time to arrive 15-30 minutes before curtain. Personally, I would recommend the Yum Yum mini-chain on 9th and 46th if you like Thai (not the best in the city by far but tasty, quick, and cheap), Five Napkin Burger on 9th and 45th, Nizza on 9th between 44th and 45th, and Southern Hospitality on 9th and 45th. All tasty and convenient to most theatres.

I make my lists way ahead of time too.  Every time I see about something that is or might be coming, I write it down.  I'll be there in the fall too.  I have a lot of the ones already mentioned and some that are not yet announced (and maybe won't be)

Front Page, Great Comet, Falsettos, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Heisenburg, Love, Love, Love, Sell/Buy/Date, Plenty, Cats (I've never seen it and figure I should) and now adding Sweet Charity.  I'm sure there are more that are yet to be announced.

I also never have a problem eating.  It's one of my top three - shows, museums, eating.  There are so many really good places and it's pretty easy to get in and out with plenty of time.

You'll have a great time.  For me, planning adds to the enjoyment of the trip.

In case it's useful here's my list that I keep. I've deleted everything from this season except shuffle along because I've seen them all. (Seeing that next week.). Not sure when last I updated it so it may not be accurate.

I just list everything that's coming and delete or put a question mark next to things after they open if I don't think I'm interested based on what I hear.

Next season:
Cats (7/14)
Smokey Joe's cafe (7/19)
Holiday inn (9/1)
Cherry orchard (9/Planning shows for October...help me make a list
Natasha, Pierre (September)
Front page (September)
Cherry Orchard (9/15)
Heisenberg (9/20)
Falsettos (9/29)
Les liaisons dangereuses (10/Planning shows for October...help me make a list
Master builder (fall)
The present (December)
Anastasia
Charlie and the chocolate factory
Come from away
Hello Dolly! (3/13)
Bandstand

If you opt to see Cats buy the least expensive ticket.  It's total boredom.   If American Psycho is still playing, it's an exciting evening of entertainment.   I am anxious for some of the new shows to start previews so I can start making my own list of shows to see this fall and winter!   Good luck making your decisions!!

Just so no one thinks my taste is that questionable, my list is a list of shows coming out next season roughly in date order--it is not in order of interest. :)

Love your list. So glad others do the same thing. My friends (non theatre) think I'm crazy that I already have a list for next spring. Let's add:

miss saigon

charlie and the chocolate factory

dear Evan Hansen (totally missing it off BW

and totally forgot about les liaisons... I'll have to add that one for Nov possibility.

Sweet Charity just got added too.

I like the idea of making one list that I keep adding to.  I was already thinking about May 2017 (Miss Saigon...I have never seen it before...and Hello, Dolly) and thought I should make my October list first, but one master list might work better.

The hard part will be narrowing them down to what I can reasonably see for my trips that are too short!

I am having so much fun making a new list!  Thank you so much for the ideas...keep them coming if/when you hear of new shows on the horizon.

Good idea about eating in Hell's Kitchen.  I am gluten-free and dairy-free, so always try to find a place to eat that can accommodate me.  I am usually dining alone, and after a show, sometimes I like a quiet place to think about the show before the next one.  Crazy as it sounds, I have always walked back to the hotel (on 53rd to 57th, usually, so that's a good 20-minute walk with zig-zagging around to take advantage of the "walk" signs.  After Hamilton on Saturday, I had to go back to my room to put another contact lens in since one of mine popped out during "It's Quiet Uptown" and I couldn't go to She Loves Me that night with only one seeing eye!  Now I will keep extra contacts on me, that's for sure!

I'm making plans for a fall trip in November, the week before Thanksgiving. (15th to the 20th).  I bought a ticket for The Great Comet a couple days ago, and have my heart set on seeing Falsettos, The Front Page and Holiday Inn.  I'll be seeing 7 shows total on the trip, so I have 3 open slots, and am anxiously awaiting what plays and musicals will be announced for the fall during the summer months.

I'm still making my show plans, but it is going slowly.  So far I have a ticket to The Front Page.  It looks like The Great Comet isn't previewing until I am back home.  I will be back to NY in May 2017 and can see it then, but tickets are only on sale through April 2017, so I can't buy anything yet.  Falsettos tickets go on sale August 6.

I feel lost without more than one ticket purchased at the moment.  Looking at The Humans which is transferring to the Schoenfeld and wondering whether it will be easy to get a discounted seat in October so maybe no need to buy in advance?

My trip is just around the corner and I have tickets to five shows, with two more slots open.  This is what I have so far:

Falsettos

Holiday Inn

The Front Page

Vietgone

Kingdom Come

Tickets to Kingdom Come were only $25, so if I find something more interesting, I can always skip that one.  I'm going to be too early for The Great Comet, so will have to wait until May to see that.  Is there anything else you recommend that I see in early October?  My first night is open, so I thought I would just walk by TKTS and see what is available.  And my last night is open right now.  Thanks for any recommendations!
