Helping a Friend

A friend of mine is coming to NYC next month...they only have time for one show. They love all musicals, so there isn't really anything that would turn them off when it comes to a Broadway show. My question is...of all the shows on Broadway right now, which one should be their one show?

Not knowing anything about your friend, how can we guess?

Some folks are going to be perfect for Hedwig.

 

Others will be perfect for 20th Century.

 

Others for something else entirely.

 

 

Tell us what he/she/they liked in the past?

Sorry, my friend is a 4th grade teacher...kind of nerdy, but also fun. The only thing she doesn't enjoy is foul language

On the 20th Century then. Very very fun, lyrics with literary allusions, standout Chenoweth performance. Not going on tour any time soon so she should try to catch it when she's here.

I definitely also agree with the Fun Home recommendation if your friend is looking for "deeper" fare, as in the kind that might give your brain (and heart) a workout. One or two f-bombs in this one but used very sparingly and appropriately.

If she wants to see her profession on stage, Matilda. Kind of in the middle of comedy and drama, but leaning more comedic. The experience of the show depends a lot on the Matilda you get though.

Gentleman's Guide is also very entertaining – it has some truly inspired rhymes in its lyrics, especially in I've Decided To Marry You. But it's going on tour soon, so maybe she wants to bet on it going to a city near her?

Book of Mormon is full of foul language, so uh... maybe not, even if it is really good.
