Saw this and enjoyed it quite a bit- very funny, engaging, and though provoking, plus Guirgis has long been an interesting playwright so I'm happy he's been recognized in this way. Personally, I would have awarded An Octoroon. It wasn't a perfect play, but was incredibly daring and challenging in a way that few plays are.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Saw MARJORIE PRIME in L.A. and personally loved it — favorite new play I saw last year. Very dry tone that, for me and my companions, unexpectedly packed an emotional wallop at the end of its intermissionless 90 minutes. Looking forward to seeing it again at Playwrights.
I haven't seen any of these plays yet, but I am disappointed by the lack of Airline Highway, The Humans, and Luna Gale, each of which I thought was strong enough to take the award.
I'll be looking forward to the Steppenwolf production of Riverside next year--fascinatingly, this award means that Steppenwolf's entire season this year is from Pulitzer Prize-winning writers: Guirgis and Baker's award-winning plays are joined by new works from Bruce Norris and Tracy Letts and a new adaptation of a Steinbeck novel.
