I've seen Cathy Rigby do the show on tour a few times, and I thought she was fantastic in the role. Her athletic background was a plus and she acted and sang it well too.
The one and only Mary Martin, who the musical role was written for, introduced generations and generations of kids (who would become later become theatre-attending or theatre-participating adults) to the show. Because of her beautiful performance, and because NBC chose to air it live, and because NBC decided to record the show in color to air it annually, and because Goodtimes Video released it onto VHS, that audiences will never forget her in the role and that new audiences discover it.
You cannot beat Mary Martin. But you can make the role your own. Sandy Duncan and Cathy Rigby have each brought their unique talents to the role and I have favorite attributes of each. I like to say that Sandy had a "whizz-bang!" and Cathy has a "Zoom!-Zing!"
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Sandy Duncan. Her Peter Pan was my first exposure to Theater. My mother took me to the national tour when I was like three or four, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. One of my first memories is her flying over the orchestra pit and being mesmerized by the whole thing.
I was never a big Sandy Duncan fan until I saw her perform on stage. She was wonderful in MY ONE AND ONLY but she blew me away in PETER PAN. I'm a Mary Martin fan but Duncan made me believe she was Peter Pan. I only wish they had recorded her performance on DVD and CD. I recall hearing they were selling the cast recording with Martin in the lobby of the theatre while Duncan was performing in the show. She insisted they refrain from doing so which they did. BTW did anyone see her in CHICAGO? I heard she was one of the best Roxie Hart's ever.
Cathy Rigby! I think she just has a youthfulness about her and her gymnast background brought a new energy to the show. Her delivery of lines and songs was spot on. I feel like Mary Martin (while being amazing) played the role as a leading lady and not as a boy who wouldn't grow up. Sandy Duncan I really can't fairly judge since I've only seen her in a few clips on youtube. However, I can watch Cathy Rigby in the role any day.
Of all the ladies who have played him, based on the video performances, I have to go with Cathy Rigby, and it's not even a close call. I have the full shows on DVD for her and Mary Martin. And I've seen the Duncan clips.
Cathy is the best.

Sandy Duncan really became Peter Pan; there was no "That's a woman playing a boy" feeling when she was playing the part. She got the boyish party, the mischievous part, and the heartbreak. Plus she could sing, dance and fly like a pro. She was perfect.
Wow, for some reason that video of Sandy Duncan singing I'm Flying brought me to tears! I remember watching Mary Martin on TV in the late 50's. Saw Sandy on Broadway. Her flying work was amazing. Oh and I know how those harnesses can hurt!

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Just once, I'd like to see one of the kids flip the hell out in mid-air. A well-timed "AAAAAAAAHHHH!" or "MOOOOOMMMMYYYYYY!" would be wonderful given they're taking flight over most of London and narrowly missing the Post Office Tower and Big Ben.

Cathy Rigby has always been my favorite. I grew up with her performances and seen her every time she's come to town. Although she is getting older and older, I am amazed that she can keep going (even if the stunts are slightly altered due to her age ... am I correct with that statement?) However, I have seen both Mary Martin and Sandy Duncan perform the role on youtube and the televised production and enjoyed their performances. The Cathy Rigby version is just so much more magical and exciting for me, as well as my love of Cathy in that role!
Sandy Duncan in PETER PAN changed my life when I was 5. My first live show.
Cathy Rigby was so amazing to me and I have a jar full of pixie dust from her, a great picture of us and a nice, personalized autograph on the program. Not to mention she was great in the role.
So it's a toss up LOL
