I know there was a screening of it in movie theaters a year or so ago. Does anyone know if there are any plans to release this? I missed it on Broadway and would love to see it.

Oh, I hope so (even if it won't be the same as seeing it live)! Jordan, you don't know what you missed out on! One of my favorite theatergoing experiences in a while.

I really wish that the National Theatre would release DVDs of the shows that they have done broadcasts of. The ones I have seen I would love to see again, and there are a bunch I haven't seen that I would love to see.

I would do practically anything for this DVD and the Cumberbatch/Miller Frankenstein DVD. I saw the latter one in theatres, and I just don't want that to be the only time.

My understanding is that there will be no DVDs - the contracts with the actors permitted only the broadcast - so the National Theatre would have to negotiate with every member of the casts for a DVD release.

This is from the NT Website for Frankenstein:
"Will you be releasing a DVD of the production?

We have no plans to release a DVD. We know from letters, tweets and emails that a great many people wanted another chance to see the production – and these encore screenings have been scheduled in response to that huge public demand. Our rights arrangements with actors and crew don’t currently permit DVD release, and we’re also keen for as many people as possible to experience the broadcasts in the format for which they were created: broadcast in HD to cinemas."
No Frankenstein DVD

That's a shame. I saw the showing in which Cumberbatch was the Creature and Jonny Lee Miller Dr. Frankenstein. Loved it. I would have liked to see the version with the roles switched as well.

And I saw Miller as the Creature and Cumberbatch as the Doctor and would also love to see the reverse! Very short sighted of NT not to have included possible dvd releases in the original negotiations...

I think at the very least, NT should have made negotiations with someone like Digital Theatre and all other involved parties to at least release a digital (copy-protected, natch) version for those of us that can't make it to any cinemas that are showing their productions, even if they don't make it available until a few months afterwards.

I live in the Seattle area, and there is only one theatre locally that does NT Live broadcasts, and sometimes it really is a pain to get into Seattle from where I am to watch these (though I did make it to Fela!, both versions of Frankenstein, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime, and I've loved all four of these presentations). If not DVD/Blu-Ray releases for whatever reasons (not cost effective or whatever), at least digitally then so you won't have to factor in the cost of a physical product.

I know that there is a high demand for these also, as I heard that there was a report of someone at one of the Seattle showings trying to video one of the encore screenings (he got caught though, and the SIFF people who presented the shows locally sent out an e-mail about it to those who are subscribed to their newsletters).

I would have loved to have seen One Man Two Guvnors by the way. I wasn't able to make it to the initial screenings though (I was out of town), and they never did encore screenings for that one, only Frankenstein.

I don't think it was short-sighted. I think it was deliberate.

It is currently the wish of the creators and actors of Frankenstein that it not be released as a DVD.

Joe, I know its not the same, but you could always see if the libary of the performing arts recorded it and watch a copy at the Lincoln Center.

Unfortunately, ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS was not taped by the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT). It's not available at the library.

They're playing encore viewings at Symphony Space this Thursday (8/25) and in September (Sunday the 25th):
