I've had a Facebook account since 2007, that's over 5 years. Never had many problems, never did anything wrong, don't have multiple accounts or anything, always used my real name. This morning I go to open FB on my phone and it says I need to sign on to a computer. Ok, so I do. It then informs me that I've been using a false name and I'm not allowed into my account until I give them my correct surname and first name. Ok, slightly annoyed at this point I type in my name as it has been on my account for 5 years and press enter. Then Facebook informs me that this name was "not accepted by their system" and I'm blocked from attempting new names for a period of time. I have no idea what to do? I tried looking on Facebook help and there is no one I can contact, only unhelpful, unrelated topics to read.

Anyone have any ideas what I can do?

UPDATE: Now in order for me to continue it's asking me to upload a copy of a Government issued ID card or my passport to verify my name. Does anybody else sense anything wrong with this situation? Under no circumstances would I ever upload copies of those to the internet. And yes - this is actually Facebook, not some fake website parading itself as Facebook. Updated On: 6/29/12 at 02:20 PM

Suckage. I got locked out of my account a year or so ago for supposedly violating policy about the use of language. I KNOW I gave never listed anything offensives. I never found any way to contact anyone that listened. It took a week maybe 10 days until my "punishment" was over. I could never get anyone to explain what I did.

Sounds fishy to me. Maybe someoone hacked your account and is trying to fish info from you. Fake sites have ways of redirecting things to their site so that it looks like it's coming from the official facebook, but isn't really. I just can't believe that facebook would ask for a copy of your passport.

I would use a different email address to set up a new facebook account. and move on with that one. Once I did that, I would also contact facebook, directly from your new account, not through these emails or messages you're getting. Tell them what's happening. They may be able to help at that point. I wouldn't want to leave an account open out there in somebody elses hands with all your info on it. Who knows what they might do.

Do you have an unusual name or the same name as a famous person? I've heard instances of people running into this problem when they have a name that Facebook suspects is false.

What artscallion said.

You have definitely been hacked. Facebook would never ask you "to upload a copy of a Government issued ID card or my passport."

Ever.

My account got hacked BAD once, so bad Facebook called me. Threetwoone , one thing Facebook had me do is check my actual email and see what my alternate email was and if it was not what it should be they said it would confirm I was hacked? Does that make sense? PM me if you need help.

That's not quite, right, though, PalJoey.

Granted, those links seem to really be about people in the public eye who want accounts, but just because they've asked for an ID to verify your account, doesn't automatically mean it's a fraud.

It's definitely real. I haven't been redirected to anything and Im not an idiot when it comes to the Internet.

Phyllis, I've been doing some research on the web and I've read a whole bunch of stories about people with strange names or names the same as celebrities who have been locked out, and facebook does reportedly ask for ID to get back in (as wrong as that sounds).

I think what's happened is when I signed up for my account back in the day I used only my last initial. At some point, Facebook changed their rules and required a full last name, but my last initial still remained. Now, Facebook decided to randomly pick on me and block me. When asked for my name again I kept using my last initial because I didn't know any better and I prefer not to use my last name. I did this one too many times and now it's asking for my ID no matter what name I type in. And there's no way I'm uploading my ID to the Internet so I guess I'm screwed.

I have no interest in making a new account and awkwardly re-friending random high school and university friends from years ago, so I guess no more Facebook for me :/

Thanks for your ideas :/ Updated On: 6/29/12 at 08:26 PM
