I was so moved by Anne Hathaway's performance - didn't want to approach it the way I originally did Evita thinking only a belter could do the part justice, but Anne's version works wonderfully here. That short scene alone had me crying. And the scenes have that gritty, "Gangs of New York" vibe - looks very well done already.
And I agree about the scene with the Lovely Ladies - gave me chills when it flashed on screen! I cannot wait to see this in Imax the first day it comes out.
Wishful thinking on my part. I'm hoping they make a print for the Imax screen - a lot of movies do, and not all 3D; they run them for a limited time. I'm happy to see it on any movie screen.
I'm dismayed by Eponine's model-perfect looks at 1:12. She's supposed to be missing a few teeth and her face hardened by life and drinking. Cosette should be the pretty one, which is why Marius is attracted to her and not Eponine. When Eponine is pretty as well, it throws everything out of whack. The audience (who sympathizes with Eponine, anyway, since she has a memorable, lovesick song and a touching death song) will no doubt think, "Why does he want boring Cosette when he can have the beautiful, headstrong Eponine?" That's been my complaint with the musical. They put too much emphasis on Eponine and not enough on Cosette, so the former comes off looking better for the audience. In the book, Marius doesn't really care about Eponine and humors her, but in the musical they're good friends. Eponine should be wretched. We should be rooting for Cosette after all she's been through.
I had a similar problem with the Phantom movie. They cast a handsome man in the title role, and his mask became more of a fashion accessory than a guise to hide his deformity. As it turns out, his face didn't look that bad once he was unmasked; it just looked like he had a bad laser peel. Meanwhile, they uglied up Patrick Wilson with that awful wig. I remember talk at the time that Christine should've left Raoul, or why didn't she choose the Phantom since he was hotter?
Eponine and the Phantom should derive some sympathy for us, but in the end they're pathetic characters. We shouldn't be rooting against Cosette and Raoul, but when they make their foils attractive and give them meaningful songs, it shifts the audience's sympathy to them.
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia
It actually looks like France and I can almost smell how bad that situation is. Can't wait to see any leaks of "Castle on a Cloud" - it should have me blubbering as well.
sadly, all the youtube trailers have been taken down.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
This is basically Anne Hathaway's early reel to Academy members. Planting the seed early in the season, making them wait in anticipation until the holiday season. She'll likely be nominated.
I've never seen a production of Les Miz that had an Eponine with missing teeth, so I think I would have been a little surprised to see a toothless Eponine in the trailer.
The official release date for the movie is actually December 14, not Christmas. This is the same day as The Hobbit, which should make for interesting box office numbers.
