Happy 10th Birthday today for 'We Will Rock You' who are having a deserved celebrity birthday bash tonight. How many of you can put their hands on their heart and say that this show would be open 10 years later, after the stinking reviews it got?
However I have seen a Saturday matinee this year, and there were a few empty seats in the house and for this show to work, it needs a full house as it is reliant on atmosphere, so the show should move to a smaller house or close. The show remaining in the Dominion isn't a option anymore, remaining there will harm its word of mouth reputation.
We Will Rock You has garnered its place in musical theatre history.
I saw a few empty rows in the stalls, but I saw it in the matinee and being honest WWRY is more of a evening show, than a afternoon one, as it doesn't really appeal to children or the matinee a ladies, or am I wrong? Should a SXaturday matinee be busy?
WWRY has done incredibly well considering it got horrific reviews, it did actually announce a closure back in 2006 only for ticket sales to go up and they took it back.
I've been to 3 Saturday matinees this year, one was about 75% full, the other 2 times it was virtually sold out. You might have just gone on a day when it was quieter.
Is that why they don't have a midweek matinee? They must be making money on just 7 performances to justify not having a midweek matinee except for once a month and during the holidays.
If I was the producers, which unfortunately I am not, I would still do 7 shows a week and would scrap the Monday and Tuesday night show and do two shows on the Sunday. I was at 'Thriller' Sunday night and was astounded how busy it was, they even had the balcony open, so obviously there is flexibility there.
I saw 'WWRY' 10 years ago, just after it opened and remember the bad press, but I new the show was going to be a hit, it had it written all over it, so expected the show to do 10 years easily.
WWRY still has some life in it, it's amazing it hasn't moved theatres in its 10 year run unlike fellow jukebox musical Mamma Mia! which will be moving to its third home in September. I imagine unless a new big show wants the Dominion, I can see WWRY remaining there for a few more years.
