Unsurprising, guess they were waiting for a theatre to become available and the Wyndham's became free, did think it would go to the Gielgud before Chariots of Fire was announced.
Saw this last night. I've probably watched the dvd and before that vhs way too many times to appreciate a new production, but I did enjoy it. Only Andy Nyman seems to stray too close to the original Laurence. Lots of the laughs are anticpated and it was weird hearing Donna Summer at the start. I suppose reviews will be out tomorrow. Meanwhile I have posted more thorough ramblings on my blog if you're interested. Abigail's Party
I think the problem with Abigail's Party is that there isn't much room to do anything different.
The play is constructed in a way that the characters and context are so tightly and clearly defined and the original is so definitive that there is minimal room for re-interpretation.
That said, this is a good production and worthy of its West End run.
As a non-Brit it was new and fresh to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. At first I thought I was in Alan Ayckbourn land but then as the laughs kept multiplying I realized I wasn't. Jill Halfpenny was, as they say, worth the price of admission.
