Did she do that on the second night?

She's a music teacher - I would imagine she is quite familiar with the song for auditions and the like. The whole thing is just great.

I felt like a mushy mess while watching and loved how fantastically coincidental it was that the woman just so happened to have on an Elphaba green top. Reminds me of a spontaneous dance Tommy Tune did with an audience member in his show a few years back.

Was Tyler Hanes performing with the Hollywood Bowl shows? I know he's been on tour with Kristin recently

I was there on Friday. Like TheatreDiva said, it was "magical."

Couldn't believe how good the duet was, while leaving the Bowl the question I heard over and over was "Was that a plant?" Glad to see it wasn't.

As for the concert as a whole: The first half was a revelation. Chenoweth sang VERY familiar (dare I say "tired") songs from films, but she made them sound brilliant. She even made material associated with Garland sound like you were hearing it for the first time. Seriouly, she was THAT good. Chenoweth was elegant, funny, touching, and full of heart.

The second half was a bit of a mess. Chenoweth replaced the glam of the first half with awkward "comic" shtick that dragged and came off as cheap and amateurish. The BLAZING SADDLES opener was a misfire, but the duet and a handful of other musical moments showed enough flashes of the brilliance to save it from being a let down.

All in all a GREAT evening at the Bowl. I was seriously tempted to go back the second night.

I actually loved the Blazing Saddles number and thought it was the best comedy bit in the entire show. I thought the Dolly Parton bit fell flat.

My biggest issue with the show was that it didn't really feel cohesive. There were a lot of wonderful moments and Chenowith's singing was fabulous, but it just seemed like a jumble of songs and numbers without much flow from one number to another. At times, Chenoweth seemed to be going for serious diva treatment and other times she was doing full shtick, and it just didn't come together. Bette Midler does what I think Chenoweth was going for, but her shows are seamless and Midler commits to the comedy as much as the singing.

Was it planned? It seems too good to not be planned! My friend was there that night and he said Kristin was looking in the house at intermission for someone specific. So it had to be planned somewhat. Most videos on that site show only when the song starts so I am unaware of how she was chosen to sing and what song TO sing! Either way it was a great video.

She told the audience she was going to sing "For Good" and needed a duet partner. She approached one woman but she didn't know the lyrics. She asked for who knew the words and people raised their hands. She talked to this woman and man and chose her because the role was a female role.

Lea Salonga usually asks audience members to sing "A Whole New World" with her too. Sometimes they are bad but many times, the singers turn out to be good.

Almira, we are in total agreement about the second half. Non of the shtick worked.

As for the duet.. ( I was there both nights). My feeling is there was probably some pre screening even before the show. Richard J Alexander seems to be great at these things. Now this is not something I know for certain. But he also directed the Streisand concert and the bit had the same pre packaged feel as the bid Streisand did with the questions from the audience. Also.. interesting to note that on both nights... even if the singers were different ( yet very similar) ... Kristen's spontaneous reactions were pretty much the same. The moment both nights was wonderful.. so I don't intend to take away from that.

At her Royal Albert Hall concert on July 12 (finally performing in London on the third try), she did the duet with Kerry Ellis who apparently was introduced as the first UK Elphaba, which is sort of kind ofaccurate, since for the London show, Ellis started as the alternate or standby for Menzel then she took over the part when Menzel left after a few months.
