I'm not just saying Bernadette Peters has a better voice, or wider range, or is better looking, or made a better Rose (all opinions): I'm stating the fact that no matter what you say about Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters is inarguably the bigger Broadway star and THE Broadway Diva of our time: 7 Tony Nominations, a career that's spanned just shy of 50 years, solo albums, cast albums, concert tours, a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, the youngest inductee into the Broadway hall of fame- and a couple dozen movies and countless TV guest spots in addition to the biggest Broadway resume since Ethel Merman.
I'm not dissing Patti; but she's got nothing on the biggest of our time, Bernadette Peters.
I am in LOVE with Bernadette!!!!!!! 60 and still a baby face!!!
"He found something that he wanted, had always wanted and always would want— not to be admired, as he had feared; not to be loved, as he had made himself believe; but to be necessary to people, to be indispensable."
-F. Scott Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise
I am not sure if it's on YouTube but I have a deleted segment of an interview (on tape) with Bernadette, from the 80's, where the writer asked her something about a character and her acting choices.
She says, "Oh! I wish I knew what I was actually doing. I just go up there and try my best. I'm supposed to the usual background research and really think about it... you know? But I don't! Don't tell anyone."
And then they both crack up laughing. But it's not a joke. That's the awkward part. If I had a converter, I would post it. It's absolute proof that Bernadette doesn't even try.
If you want to count Hollywood credits, then inarguably the Diva of our day is neither Bernadette Peters nor Patti LuPone but Julie Andrews or Angela Lansbury.
WTF is this even an argument? Do we really have to label one is better than the other? What a pointless thread.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

And you think of all of the things you've seen, and you wish that you could live in between ,and you're back again only different than before...

And actually Joe is wrong. According to IBDB Patti has more Broadway credits. Patti has 25, and Bernadette has 15. Both include one night concerts/benefits, etc.
ooooh harsh, TooDarnHot. :P irrelevance of the post aside...I think Peters is a bigger star.

Perhaps she is a little more mainstream. But if you asked the average citizen, I doubt they'd know either Diva. In my personal opinion. At least the majority of them.
Agreed that most people probably wouldn't be able to tell you who either of them were, but more likely with Peters.

I really can't help but wonder what has happened to JoeKv ! He was always sarcastic, witty and, yes, bitchy, but there was a time when he was contributing something to this board and we could communicate with him ! Now, it's pointless, incoherent post after pointless, incoherent post ! Not to mention his unbelievable hostility to EVERYONE ! Shame
I agree with the original post, but what's wrong with liking them both? Although I think Bernadette is a MUCH better singer and actress than Patti could ever hope to be, I am warming up to Patti. I love Patti's wit and I love Bernadette's humility, a quality Patti seems to be lacking.
This (forgive my bluntness) idiotic thread reminds me of that hilarious sequence in Woody Allen's "Radio Days," where his parents argue about which ocean is better, the Atlantic or the Pacific.
Greek Musical Fan I'm curious as to what you found hostile in my post: I even gave credit to Miss LuPone as quite successful in her own right, merely that Peters is by far the bigger star and more successful in her field.
