In Ceylon, the fishermen elect a chief. It is to be the intransigent Zurga.

With his friend Nadir, they swear to renounce their love for the priestess Leïla, with whom they were once in love.

However, when, on the temple road, Leïla intones sacred songs, Nadir recognises the melodic sound of her voice and decides to join her.

The two of them are betrayed, and Zurga condemns them to death.

He is, however, stricken with remorse. An old pearl necklace is going to make all the difference...
