When a Jew dies, their body is seldom left alone. Loved ones will sit "Shemira" until the moment of burial: sometimes in silence, sometimes crying... Sometimes they have a motherf**ker of a hangover, smudged eyeliner and a wicked sense of humour. This Jew Sits is the debut solo offering by Sarah Reuben. It is dark, hilarious and unmissable.

This Jew Sits is the debut solo theatrical offering of Sarah Reuben (Insert Coin, The Big HOO-HAA). With a smudged-eyeliner darkness and a wicked irreverence, it is a piece of theatre that dissects what it is to be alive whilst staring death straight in the eye.

Reuben plays the part of This Jew - a woman who is riddled with deeply human flaws and bad habits, that she covers up with a light-hearted frivolity. This Jew is experiencing a "day after the night before" like no other: sitting alongside a dead body until the time for their burial arrives. Her experience of Shemira is sobering (in both senses) and full of pathos.

"This piece has been brewing in me for a few years," says Sarah Reuben, "While This Jew is her own character entirely, the core of this show came to me while I was actually sitting Shemira for my own Grandmother. Ever since, I've been developing this work, making it into something that reflects the best I hope that theatre can be: human and flawed, powerful and irreverent".

This Jew Sits opens on the 24th of September at the North Melbourne Town Hall and runs until the 1st of October, with no show on Monday. This incredibly intimate production has limited capacity and bookings are highly recommended.
