A new film program heralds the onset of summer from December-February at Southgate Cinema, Melbourne's only silent cinema. A new season of the long-running and free Tuesday movie nights will be programmed until May 2015.

Already an attractive anomaly as a free deckchair cinema, Southgate Cinema now offers a unique 'Blue Class' experience with a movie menu delivered to your deckchair from next-door eatery Bluetrain, recently refurbished with a critically acclaimed new design. The full menu can be viewed here.

Southgate cinephiles can devour gourmet pizzas and graze on an eclectic variety of tasting platters with selections including a Bollywood platter, soft shell taco platter and Chinese five spice chicken ribs as they sit back and watch films with headphones and audio kits.

On Sunday 7 December, Southgate Cinema will screen a live broadcast of Tropfest 2014! Deckchair bookings available via the Southgate website from 9:00am on 5 December.

Highlights of the most recent Southgate Cinema program include the inspiring soccer documentary Next Goal Wins, about the attempts of the much-maligned American Samoa team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup; the gripping Oceanic survival tale All Is Lost, starring the great Robert Redford as a lone sailor lost at sea; plus the most recent X-Menand Captain America movies for anyone looking for a dose of Hollywood action.

Celebrated by audiences and critics alike, Southgate Cinema is listed on Time Out Melbourne's Bucket List and as a Herald Sun Hidden Gem.

The full December-February Southgate Cinema program is available here.

Surrounding the cinema is Southgate's diverse range of restaurants and bars, including newly opened Italian restaurant and wine bar ARTUSI, Bavarian bier hall Hophaus and Inuit and native North American inspired restaurant Amarok. A range of boutique retailers including vintage and fair trade fashion, designer homewares, art deco jewellery and antique art can also be found within the precinct.

Southgate is located in the heart of Melbourne; adjacent to the Arts Centre Melbourne on the Yarra River, opposite the sprawling heritage listed Flinders Street Station.
