After successful seasons in five New Zealand cities "Chet Baker: Like Someone in Love" will be performed in Australia for the first time from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th of October 2011 at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne.

Dubbed the "James Dean of Jazz", this is Chet Baker's story. Writer and performer David Goldthorpe brings to life the haunting and unforgettable music that made Baker famous and the captivating story that made him infamous.

This exploration of a man known for his pensive trumpet playing and his bad boy attitude is accompanied by a live three piece band featuring some of New Zealand and Melbourne's top jazz players.

'I don't know whether I'm a trumpet player who sings or a singer who plays the trumpet,' Chet Baker once told an interviewer.

Authenticity was key when Goldthorpe developed the story of "Chet Baker: Like Someone in Love". He taught himself the trumpet in just eight weeks before the show debuted to great critical acclaim at the 2007 Wellington Fringe Festival and Goldthorpe has honed this skill in the years since then.

Baker's well-publicised addiction to heroin damaged his career and was a central theme of his life. It was very important to Goldthorpe that his portrayal of the darker side of the trumpeter's life be genuine and hold up to scrutiny should a heroin user see the production. "Each time I perform the show in a new city I visit the local needle exchange to get some new props and meet some of the locals who always have an interesting tale or two." says Goldthorpe.

In this unique telling of the life and times of Chet Baker, Goldthorpe captures the cool romanticism of the musician, whose mystique involved an alluring strain of danger.

"There is the story of the famous audition with Charlie Parker, talk of Chet's rise to fame and his first love but I also explore the darker side that was present throughout his career."

"This show is a lot more gritty than your usual biopic or tribute show."

Tickets are available at $27 and $24 for concession and can be booked through the show website www.ChetBakerShow.com or www.TheButterflyClub.com

"I want audiences to have a chance to meet the real Chet Baker, to get closer than they ever could by seeing a photograph or reading an album cover."
