With its pulsating rock score and emotionally-charged story, bare has thrilled and moved audiences all over the world since its Los Angeles premiere over a decade ago. bare is a contemporary rock opera that follows a group of seniors in their final semester at St. Cecelia’s, a prestigious Catholic boarding high school. They wrestle with the universal issues of identity, sexuality, drugs, and social acceptance while trying to figure what the world expects of them (while trying to figure what they accept of themselves).

Austin Theatre Project is thrilled to bring this unconventional musical to Austin for yet another Central Texas Premiere. bare is provocative, raw, and unyielding in its exploration of how today’s generation navigates the somewhat terrifying path between adolescence and adulthood. The show examines the consequences of baring one’s soul… or hiding it from those who matter most.

A story of discovery, acceptance and love, bare centers on the clandestine relationship between two roommates in a well-locked dorm room: charismatic, golden-boy Jason and sensitive, soulful Peter (performed by ATP newcomers Andrew Brett and Rodrigo M Zaragoza, respectively). As the pair navigates adolescence, we see the consequences of secrecy unravel though their eyes and those around them: Nadia, Jason’s sardonic twin sister (played by Cat Phillips, another ATP newcomer); who is a hard-edged outsider; the attention-prone Ivy, (performed by Alicia Cornwell, last seen in Dogfight) who shamelessly pursues her obsession with Jason; and forlorn Matt (newcomer Jacob Barber), whose affections for Ivy are repeatedly rebuffed.

Additional students in the Senior class of St. Cecelia’s are Dylan Tacker (Dogfight), Susannah Crowell, (The Rocky Horror Show, Sweeney Todd), Isaac Arrieta, (Avenue Q, ‘S Gershwin), and newcomers Nina Amara, Susan Johnston Taylor, Rebecca Adelson, and Samuel Todd.

Of course, a musical about high schoolers wouldn’t be complete without adults to provide comfort and confusion. In bare we find Peter’s mother Claire (Emily Christine Smith, [title of show]); the Parish Priest (newcomer Darren Scharf), and Sister Chantelle, the school’s drama teacher played by newcomer Allegra Fox.

bare is directed by Jeff Hinkle (Sweeney Todd, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Carrie: the Musical, and Corpus Christi), music direction by ATP’s Artistic and resident Music Director David Blackburn, and choreographed by Chris Ehresman ([title of show], The Great American Trailer Park Musical). Sound design is by Jeff Miller, Lighting design is by James Jennings, and costumes will be designed by Veronica Prior.

bare runs June 9-24 and will be performed at the Trinity Street Players’ Black Box Theatre at 901 Trinity Street. The box office opens May 12 and tickets are priced from $30 (Premium Reserved Seating) to $15 (group rate).
