Tackling weight issues, United Solo Theatre Festival, Luckett Productions, St. Lawrence Univ., and CalState Univ.-Dominguez Hills present the New York premiere of "YoungGiftedandFAT," a powerful play conceived and performed by Professor of Performance, Sharrell D. Luckett, Ph.D.

Coming off of a sold out run in metro Los Angeles, CA, the play is co-directed by Sharrell Luckett, Guy Thorne, and Rahbi Hines. The play also includes musical direction by recording artist sensation Rahbi, and media design/choreography by Guy Thorne. Performances will be held in the intimate Studio Theatre located at Theatre Row on 42nd Street on Sunday, October 11 at 4 p.m.

Once 100 pounds heavier, Sharrell D. Luckett serves up a heaping helping of interesting insights in this autobiographical solo show about her emotional struggle to adjust to life after her major weight loss. Though she's gained a newly slender body, her inner self seems to have trouble letting go of her status as a morbidly obese person. Woven through with elements of music and dance, "YoungGiftedandFAT" explores the prejudices and real-world limitations placed upon the severely overweight and the Fat Acceptance movement that's fighting those pre-conceptions. "This play is very personal, but universal at the same time. Nearly all women know what it feels like to have body image issues and to struggle with weight," Luckett said.

Kenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live states, "Sharrell's talent is truly extraordinary!" while Broadway composer (Other Desert Cities) Justin Ellington proclaims, "Sharrell is truly a force to be reckoned with in the arts! Her vision and dedication to the craft is what theater deserves and needs!"

Luckett has enlisted some of the best play makers in the business to help bring her story to life on the stage. Rahbi, the musical director, recently opened for Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu. He has also shared the stage and collaborated with PJ Morton of Maroon 5, Lauryn Hill, and India.Arie. Guy Thorne, former principal dancer with Garth Fagan Dance, is the choreographer and media designer, recently touring the UK with his company, FuturPointe Dance.

The production will be underscored with live piano accompaniment performed by Osbaldo Maravilla.
