Close to 200 high school students will participate in this year's New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF) Finals Event sponsored by the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) and the City University of New York (CUNY). The students, who scored in the top 25 percent of their category during the NYCSEF Preliminary Event held on Sunday, March 6, will present their research projects under the big blue whale in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History. Finalists will receive an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles, CA in May to represent New York City at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), where they will compete for scholarships and awards.
Semifinalists' projects include investigating the efficiency of solar panels using nano structures; studying the impact of heavy metals in the waters and soil around local estuaries; alternative sources for biofuels; the roles of various genes and proteins in diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's and drug manufacturing; and the connection between sound and sight.
The New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF) is the city's largest high school research competition. Each year, several hundred high school students from throughout the five boroughs of New York City present their research projects to expert judges and compete for a variety of prizes.WHERE American Museum of Natural History
