Len Cariou, Laura Osnes, Telly Leung and More Set for 54 Below Appearances This Week
CHARLES CASTRONOVO, Dec. 1 AT 11:30PM:
54 Below is pleased to enter the word of professional opera when acclaimed tenor Charles Castronovo takes to our stage for three special performances only. In fact, on December 1 & 8, he’ll be jumping in a cab following his performance in Don Giovanni at the Met to join us at Broadway’s Nightclub in celebration of his new CD, Dolci Napoli, The Neapolitan Songs, featuring new interpretations of classic songs from Italy with his band, Sweet Nectar. Charles captures the spirit of Naples in English and Italian, introducing these songs to new audiences in the same manner as the great Italian-American singers of the last generation, but with a beautiful operatic voice that does them justice. Cover charge $25-35. $25 food & beverage minimum.
Barbara Carroll, Dec. 2 at 1PM:
54 Below is honored to welcome jazz legend Barbara Carroll to our stage for a series of seven exciting jazz brunches. In 1947, Leonard Feather dubber her “the first girl ever to play bebop piano.” In a career that has spanned more than half a century (she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie’s big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947), Ms. Carroll is an elegant jazz pianist, composer and vocalist, long recognized as one of the premier players of swinging jazz piano. Her inventive piano playing and totally unique vocal sound leads her into transforming any composition into her own art with her trademark emotional directness and respect for the tune, its lyrics and its many possibilities. Says Stephen Holden in The New York Times, “Barbara Carroll is about as good as it gets!” Cover charge $30-40. $25 food & beverage minimum.
Telly Leung, Dec. 2 at 9:30PM:
After starring in the world premiere of Allegiance at The Old Globe in San Diego, Broadway's Telly Leung (Godspell, Rent, "Glee") returns to NYC (and to Studio 54, where he appeared in Pacific Overtures) to celebrate the release of his upcoming CD, I'll Cover You, on the Yellow Sound Label. Join Telly for an evening of great songs and personal anecdotes, directed by Alan Muraoka (Sesame Street, Miss Saigon) with musical direction by Gary Adler (Alter Boyz), featuring a full jazz trio and a string quartet. Cover charge $25-35. $25 food & beverage minimum.
