LGBAC to Honor Stephen Schwartz at Symphony Space; Liz Callaway to Perform!

The Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps (LGBAC) is set to honor award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz with its 2016 Profile in Leadership Award for his outstanding musical achievements and contributions to the LGBTQ community. The presentation will take place during the upcoming Symphonic Band concert, Musical Excursions, at Symphony Space on Saturday April 9th at 8pm.

Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford will MC the concert featuring Tony-nominated Liz Callaway performing Schwartz's "Meadowlark" from The Baker's Wife. Also appearing will be 17-year-old New York City high school student Beatrice Mirzoyev, winner of the 2016 Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps High School Concerto Competition and Scholarship, performing Concerto for Flute, Op. 107 by Cécile Chaminade.

The 95-member wind ensemble will transport guests on a musical excursion around the world embarking with John Williams's inspiring Olympic Fanfare and Theme commissioned for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The journey continues with stops in Paris, the UK, Moscow, and finally Mexico for a sultry rendition of Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez. Along the way, the band will perform the the world premiere of Laila, a work from NYC composer Rosalie Burrell commissioned by the LGBAC and made possible by a grant from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.

Tickets are $15-$30 and are available at lgbac.org/tickets or through the Symphony Space box office. The April 9 concert will run approximately 2 hours with intermission.
