Exclusive: Broadway Siblings Sydney and Jake Lucas, Arielle and Adam Jacobs, and the Keenan-Bolgers on National Siblings Day and More!

Today is National Siblings Day and to celebrate BroadwayWorld tracked down three sets of Broadway siblings to chat about how performing and producing has affected their sibling dynamic! We sat down with Broadway's Sydney and Jake Lucas, Adam and Arielle Jacobs, and performing trio Andrew, Maggie, and Celia Keenan-Bolger.

Sydney most recently starred in Fun Home on Broadway and in a concert production of The Secret Garden, and Jake most recently starred in The King and I. Adam Jacobs stars as the title character of Aladdin on Broadway and Arielle recently played Nessarose in Wicked. Andrew currently stars in Tuck Everlasting (now in previews on Broadway), Celia recently starred in The Glass Menagerie on Broadway and The Oldest Boy at Lincoln Center, and their sibling Maggie is the co-founder of Honest Accomplice - a non-profit theatre company in NYC.

Who was the first to start performing?

Sydney: Jake & I would watch our older brother, Brock, in his community theatre productions when we were very little, ages 3 & 4, but the first Broadway show I remember seeing at age 3 was Xanadu with Cheyenne Jackson. My family sat in the front row, house left where the cast would make entrances/exits to/from stage. The cast would give me high-fives as they went by and I remember all the beautiful colors, costumes, lighting, dance moves & roller-skating.

Jake: The theatre in our community had musical productions for 3rd grade through 7th grade. One year they were putting on Seussical. Our brother Brock had the role of Horton, and they didn't have enough Who's cast for the production so they searched for musical kids younger than 3rd grade. When they couldn't find enough 2nd graders, they looked for 1st graders. I was in 1st grade at the time, so they asked me as well as another girl in 1st grade. Sydney was in Kindergarten and was quite livid that she was not asked to be a Who.

But it was Sydney who inspired us all to do this professionally. Had she not been so adamant with our parents that she wanted to be an actor, we'd likely still be doing community theatre. Unfortunately, Brock was already 12 which is really old for trying to get into Broadway as a kid. I feel bad that he's not had the same experiences/opportunities as we've had though he's equally as talented. I feel that our timing into Broadway has made all the difference in our continued success.

Arielle: I started singing and dancing first. Dancing began at age 3, at the local ballet school. And then tap and jazz classes. Eventually I started singing because I wanted to be a pop singer like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. And I convinced Adam to take singing lessons too, because it was fun. He says he did it so he could meet the cute girls in the kids song/dance troupe, but I think he liked it too since he was always a good singer.

Adam: As my sis will tell you, she started performing first and therefore claims that I owe my entire career to her, which for all intents and purposes is a true statement. Without her asking me to join Razzle Dazzle, a lively song and dance troupe in SF, I might not have gotten into singing and performing.

Andrew: Maggie and I grew up watching Celia perform. The first show I ever saw was when I was a baby, sitting on my mom's lap watching Celia. Also with three kids, I'm not sure I had much of a say in the matter. Carpooling was way easier with all of us doing the same thing

Maggie: Andrew and I pretty much followed in Celia's footsteps. We grew up backstage with her doing theatre and, since she was the coolest older sister ever, we pretty much wanted to do everything she did.

Celia: I was always into theatre and since I'm the oldest, Maggie and Andrew were dragged to a bunch of rehearsals of mine. So I'm not sure they had much of a choice in the matter.

How has all of you being in the industry affected the dynamic of your relationship with your siblings?

Sydney: It's definitely made our relationship stronger!

Jake: It's wonderful to have a sibling who understands exactly what you mean when you are referring to a work situation or stage situation. Although logistics are more complicated because both of us are in the industry, our relationship is definitely made better.

Arielle: I love that we're both in the business. We get to support each other at our performances and it's lucky that we are fans of each other too. I think it wouldn't be very fun if your sibling was also in the business, but you didn't like their voice, or if there was competition between you. Fortunately we've never had any of that. Also, it helps that Adam is a killer piano player and can sightread anything. He's helped me prepare for many auditions before, since I don't play piano.

Adam: It's been wonderful having a sister in the business. We've been able to help and support each other. As you know this business is very up and down, so it's great to have somebody there who understands what it's like and help you keep a healthy perspective. Helping get each other work ain't so bad either!

Andrew: It's been such a positive aspect of my life. The fact that all three of us have a similar passion is special enough, but the fact that we've each found our own niche in the industry and can be inspired by each other's work is incredible.

Maggie: I'm in a slightly different kind of field than Andrew and Celia, so there's not as much crossover as there might be between the two of them. Sometimes at dinner conversations they talk about things I have no insight into, but they also talk about cute boys which I don't have much of an insight into either!

Celia: I think it creates an enormous amount of understanding. Right now I'm feeling so anxious and excited for Andrew's show to open. I know what it feels like to work for a long time on something and then give it to the world. It's exhilarating and also stressful.

What special skills or talent of your sibling's do you wish you could have?

Sydney: I wish I could touch my nose with my tongue, I wish I could juggle, and I wish I could whistle like Jake.

Jake: I wish I could lick my own elbow like Sydney and be more free-spirited.

Arielle: I wish that I had his ability to do impressions! He's such a natural comedian, and can turn into anyone. And he plays so many instruments (piano, guitar, harmonica), and has a mind to pick up languages quickly.

Adam: I wish I had Arielle's talent of multi-tasking and making good use of time. She always seems to have so many different projects at any given time which fulfill her in different areas of her life. I wish I had a little more of that capability.

Andrew: I wish I had Maggie's organizational and producing skills. She is a serious maniac. I would have accomplished so much more in my life if I had her work ethic. For Celia, I wish I had her confidence in trusting simplicity with her acting. Seeing her in GLASS MENAGERIE, I was blown away by the punch she was able to pack with such nuance and quiet specificity.

Maggie: I wish I had Celia's gift of conversation. She can talk to anyone in a genuine, engaged way and find out such interesting things in such a short period of time. I wish I had Andrew's eye for editing/filming, he's graciously done a number of films for my theatre company, Honest Accomplice Theatre, and I swear we could give him the worst set up or most challenging script and he would turn it into something incredible.

Celia: Both of my siblings are incredible at creating their own work. And I so admire Maggie's pursuit of social justice while she makes art.

If you could play any part your sibling has played, which would it be?

Sydney: I'd want to play all of Jake's parts for different reasons: Les (Newsies) & Ralphie (A Christmas Story) because they are such fun shows, Louis (The King & I) because I want my shot at being Kelli O'Hara's on-stage child, and John Darling (Peter Pan Live) because of the flying, of course, and training Nana.

Jake: Well, my only choices are Small Alison (Fun Home) and Mary Lennox (Secret Garden). Since I think it would be funny to have Micheal Cerveris airplane me, I'll go with Small Alison.

Arielle: If I could play any part that Adam has played, I think it would be Zorro in the musical Zorro. He was awesome! Sword-fighting and flamenco guitar and goofy comedy intermixed with sultry Antonio Banderas-like badass one-liners. It was such an incredible multi-dimensional performance.

Adam: Oh that's a fun one. I would probably say Nina in In The Heights. But I have a feeling that people won't want to see my in drag.

Andrew: I'd choose Celia's turn as "Mary" in MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. Let me sink my teeth into that boozy, withering character!

Maggie: Celia and I actually both played Gretel in The Sound of Music when we were tiny. She played it a bit before I did (as the oldest sister) but I think it was a pretty solid role for the both of us.

Andrew... I think he played a dancing mascot on a soap opera once. I would totally be into that role.

Celia: My sister played Mary Lenox in a production of the secret garden when we were growing up. I think that might still be one of my dream roles.

If you could do a Broadway show together, what would it be?

Sydney: This is a hard one! Are there many shows for siblings at our age? Maybe 13 The Musical because we love Jason Robert Brown, but it can get complicated because we don't want to play each other's love interest. Eww! Maybe, Newsies - Katherine and Crutchie?

Jake: Or perhaps Pippin - Leading Player and Pippin?

Arielle: We are waiting for this to happen! I think it could be Hamilton, as Aaron Burr and Eliza. They don't have to kiss! Or maybe Evita or Miss Saigon.

Adam: We were just talking about this! Evita (Che, Evita), Miss Saigon (Thuy, Kim), and West Side Story (Bernardo, Maria) were our first thoughts. There are quite a few characters in Hamilton we might be able to play that aren't love interests. It's hard to find a show where both the male and female leads aren't lovers. (and we'd both want to play leads of course...)

Andrew: I'd love to get to do JOHN & JEN with either of my sisters. Or maybe we could get Andrew Lippa to write in a third sibling. JOHN & JEN...and KATHY?

Maggie: At BroadwayCon Andrew suggested we revive a show we all did together back in 1995 which was The Secret Garden. Andrew and I are now a bit too old to play Mary and Colin so Celia would be Martha, Andrew Dickin and I'd be Ben, the elderly gardner.

Celia: Maybe we could all be in August Osage County together. That could be real fun.

Do you have any special plans for National Siblings Day?

Jake: Not really. We're just trying to get our school work done by May because that's when Sydney will go start filming for AMC's "The Son."

Arielle: Rehearsing for our upcoming "All in the Family" concert at Symphony Space, and planning our own sibling cabaret show... maybe over Thai food or Bubble Tea... since we like those a lot.

Adam: Actually we'll be rehearsing for the "All In The Family" concert at Symphony Space happening on the following day, April 11th. Come check it out!

Andrew: I'll be performing in TUCK EVERLASTING but I'm reminded of my sisters every single time I step on stage. In the show, my character has a complicated relationship with his brother and every night there are some lines that truly break my heart. It makes me so thankful for my siblings and reminds me to never take them for granted.

Maggie: Usually I just find the most embarrassing childhood pictures of the two of them to post on Facebook.

Celia: When is national siblings day again?

What would be the title of you and your sibling 54 Below cabaret?

Sydney: Oh gosh, I don't know. But I do know the show would have to include our brother, Brock. Maybe, "Periscope Adventures", "Broadway Barks' Cat Tales", or "All Silliness, All the Time."

Arielle: Still trying to come up with a good one.

Adam: You know, I was very proud of myself for coming up with the title, "Sibling Revelry" all on my own, only to find out that it was taken by Liz and Ann Hampton Callaway. Those darn Callaway sisters! We'll have to come up with something just as clever but it will be difficult.

Andrew: The Lollipop Guild!

Maggie: Tiny Hippie Munchkin Kids who Lived in a Boot (I'm totally stealing that from Andrew who said it in an interview at some point...)

Celia: 'Our family can beat your family at parlor games'

If there was one song you could duet on, what would it be?

Sydney: We already do the Star Spangled Banner and have some go-to songs from Frozen and Wicked that we like to harmonize to, but everyone loves and sings those so that's not too original.

Jake: We've also liked singing Somewhere Over Indiana and Before the Old Man Comes Home (A Christmas Story), or Santa Fe (Newsies) because of the Brooklyn dialects, but I'd like to find some new material to do once my voice stops changing.

Arielle: Well, we would never play these parts together, but I think we would sound awesome singing "Wheels of a Dream" from Ragtime, or "Written in the Stars" from Aida. Just for fun, you know?

Adam: I think we would totally rock "Suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors. Oh wait! We already did that and it's on my debut solo album, "Right Where I Belong", Songs of Alan Menken, which is available now on iTunes, Spotify, and CDBaby. (#ShamelessPlug)

Andrew: The Schuyler Sisters... WORK!

Maggie: There aren't nearly enough sibling trios in the world. Clearly this needs to be remedied.

Celia: There's a Pete Mills song called Runaways that I would love to sing with Andrew. And I could sing the first Indigo Girls album in its entirety with Maggie.
