Masters of the Currents is a collaborative theater sharing and community celebration created with the participation of the local Micronesian community. The event addresses the current tension in Hawaii surrounding its newest immigrants from Micronesia combining community-based story collection, social justice practices and devised theater techniques that will result in a world premiere professional theatre production in Hawaii.

This community-driven event is a led by Los Angeles-based TeAda Productions, in collaboration with The Alliance for Drama Education, and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth. It will premiere as part of HTY's 2017 Season in October and will also tour the neighbor islands in Spring of 2018.

ADMISSION: FREE. TICKETS: https://mocsummer2017.eventbrite.com. This collaborative theater sharing and community celebration is appropriate for all ages.

TeAda Productions' cross-disciplinary performances address health, education, and social justice issues of communities of color. TeAda's community-based projects embrace a fearless commitment to provide artists the space to explore cultural and political issues most relevant to their communities. Community engagement partners include Innocenta Sound-Kikku and the Micronesian Health Advisory Coalition, and Kokua Kalihi Valley.

Lead Artists

Leilani Chan and Ova Saopeng were raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and are currently Los Angeles-based theater artists. They have over fifteen years experience working with refugee and immigrant communities. Their engaging artistic methodology in creating new work involves sharing community based story collection methods, social justice practices and devised ensemble techniques in the process. This project is their opportunity to return to their roots, to kokua (give back), and to learn how things have changed or stayed the same. It is their intention that the process and resulting performances will set in motion more understanding, healing, reconciliation toward deep dialogue.
