Christian Marclay to Join Bang on a Can All-Stars 4/28

New York-based visual artist and composer Christian Marclay will be onstage with the Bang on a Can All-Stars at Lincoln Center on April 28 for the U.S. premiere of Field Recordings, a major nine-composer multimedia project that uses film, found sound, and archival audio and video (enhanced by conceptual set designer Jim Findlay) to build a bridge between the seen and unseen, the here and the absent, the present and the past.

This performance, the culmination of Bang on a Can @ 25 Years, takes place in Alice Tully Hall. The composers contributing to Field Recordings are Tyondai Braxton, Florent Ghys, Michael Gordon, David Lang, Julia Wolfe and Evan Ziporyn. In addition to Mr. Marclay, Mira Calix and Nick Zammuto will join the All-Stars on stage for this performance.

Christian Marclay’s innovative work explores the juxtaposition between sound recording, photography, video and film. As both a performer and sound artist, he has experimented, composed and performed with phonograph records and turntables since 1979 to create his unique “theater of sound.” Also a disc jockey and filmmaker, his installations and video/film collages display provocative musical and visual landscapes and have been included in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art New York, Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou Paris, Kunsthaus Zurich and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has collaborated with musicians such as John Zorn, Elliot Sharp, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Shelley Hirsh, Christian Wolff, Butch Morris, Otomo Yoshihide, Arto Lindsay and Sonic Youth. 

As the first non-rap DJ to make an art form out of the turntable, treating the instrument as a means to rip songs apart, not bridge them together, Mr. Marclay is considered a pioneer of using gramophone records and turntables as musical instruments to create sound collages. At the 2011 Venice Biennale, Marclay was recognized as the best artist in the official exhibition, winning the Golden Lion for The Clock, a 24-hour compilation of time-related scenes from movies that debuted at London's White Cube gallery in 2010. Newsweek responded by naming Marclay one of the ten most important artists of today.
