The Nutcracker ballet, known to millions for Tchaikovsky's lush score, premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892. A rare chance to see it performed with lavish sets and costumes by the magnificent Bolshoi Ballet arrives just in time for the holiday season.

The Bolshoi's Nutcracker will be broadcast on the big screen at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater on Sunday, December 21, at 7 pm.

The classic story takes place on Christmas Eve. Marie's godfather gives her a strange toy: a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man. At midnight, when the celebrations are over, all the toys magically come to life. The nutcracker grows to human size and takes charge of the tin soldiers, flying to the rescue of Marie, who is threatened by the Mouse King and his mouse army. The tale explores the universal themes of love, power and evil.

This choreographic version, created for the Bolshoi by Yuri Grigorovich, is full of romanticism and philosophical reflections on ideal love. Masterfully interpreted by the Bolshoi dancers, it will enchant the whole family for the festive season, proving that one is never too young or too old to be swept away by The Nutcracker.

Tickets for The Nutcracker are $17, $10 students, and may be purchased at www.townhalltheater.org, 802 382-9222, at the THT Box Office (Mon-Sat, Noon-5 pm) or at the door if available.
