Arts on the Horizon to Present POINT A TO POINT B, 10/9-18

Arts on the Horizon, the DC metro area's only theatre company exclusively focused on creating original work for children ages 0 - 6, presents Point A to Point B October 9 - 18, 2015 at the W-3 Theatre at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA. This world premiere, nonverbal play conceived by David Kilpatrick and directed by Megan Alrutz is inspired by the American on the Move exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

It's just another day at the lab, but today's particular assignment has the two employees scratching their heads: a ball keeps appearing from a spot labeled "Point A" and needs to travel to "Point B." The catch is that the ball can never travel the same way twice! As the two co-workers - one a careful scientist, the other an athletic risk-taker - begin to solve the puzzle together, they explore different modes of transportation in new, wonderful, and exciting ways. Michelle Kozlak, Producing Artistic Director is thrilled that this production will kick-off the 2015-16 season. Kozlak says, "Point A to Point B uses trains, planes, and other means of travel to demonstrate various elementary physics concepts as well as problem-solving skills, in a fun and creative way. We hope that the children will take this inquisitive spirit home and continue the adventure, exploring and expanding their own world."

The cast features local professional performers: Natalie Cutcher and Ryan Sellers with musical accompaniment by Shanta Parasuraman. Director Megan Alturz's career is centered around theatre with and for youth. A leading professor at the University of Texas at Austin, she heads the MFA program in Drama & Theatre for Youth & Communities. Recently in DC, she worked on Mo Willem's Elephant & Piggie's We are in a Play! at the Kennedy Center. Playwright David Kilpatrick returns to Arts on the Horizon with his fourth world-premiere play. Manager of the Kennedy Center Theatre for Young Audiences, he has worked on world premiere commissions/productions, national and international presentations, the national touring program, and the biennial New Visions/New Voices, which develops new work for the field.

ABOUT ARTS ON THE HORIZON

Arts on the Horizon, founded in 2009, is a professional, non-profit theatre company with a specific focus of providing performances and education programs for the very young. Our performances are designed to take place in an intimate setting where children not only feel comfortable to learn and explore, but are also an integral part of the performance. We have the utmost respect for children and want what may be their first theatrical performance to entertain them, challenge them, spark creativity and enhance the imaginative play in which many children this age engage. Since 2011, our non-verbal productions have been performed on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Workhouse Arts Center, The Athenaeum and other venues and schools in the DC metro area. In May 2013, the company performed at Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare as part of the national One Theatre World Festival. In the spring of 2015, Arts on the Horizon's show, Blossom's Rainbow, was an event of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. In addition to our performances, we also offer education programs, which provide targeted exploration of themes and ideas in order to help children enhance their language development, socialization, and fine and gross motor skills; all within a meaningful, nurturing environment where children can develop their sense of self and increase their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

For tickets to Point A to Point B at the Workhouse Arts Center:

The W-3 Theatre at the Workhouse Arts Center is located at 9601 Ox Road, Lorton, VA 22079. Performances run Friday - Sunday, October 9 - 11 at 10:30 am; Monday October 12 at 10:00 am and 11:30 am; and Wednesday - Sunday, October 14 - 18 at 10:30 am. Tickets are $9 for children and adults and can be purchased online at www.ArtsOnTheHorizon.org or at the door on the day of performance. Children under 12 months old are admitted free of charge.

Arts on the Horizon offers a military family rate of $6 per ticket of all performances in Virginia. Active duty military personnel and their family can purchase these discounted tickets directly on the website and will need to show a current military ID when picking up their tickets on the day of the performance.
