Variety.com speculates that this year's Tony Awards could potentially make history in the Best New Musical category as being the first year in which four "jukebox" musicals are nominated for the award. The article cites American Idiot, Come Fly Away, Million Dollar Quartet, Fela!, and Everyday Rapture as the frontrunners for the category, all of which use preexisting music ranging from Sinatra to Green Day.

Joe DiPietro, co-lyricist and book writer for one of the season's only musicals to feature an original score, Memphis, commented on the quickly changing attitudes toward the jukebox trend: "Jukebox musicals were thought to be both the nadir and the death of the modern musical. Now, of course, the vast majority of (new) musicals on Broadway this season are jukebox. Amazing."
