A legendary dog-musher, entrepreneur, and king of the Inuit tribe, Jujiro Wada was revered by many in Alaska and the Yukon Territory during the turn of the 20th century. Wada was born to a poor family in Japan and dreamed about the wealth of America. He set sail for San Francisco on a steamship at the age of 16 and labored as a cabin boy on on a whaling ship in Alaska where he acquired the English language. Wada continued his travels in the cold North and attained skills as a hunter, whaler, gold miner, dog musher, and business man. He worked for E. T. Barnette when the Fairbanks trading post was established, traveled amazing distances by dogsled to bring news, and even marked the way for the Iditarod Trail. Though he suffered countless hardships and cruelties, he remained strong and resillient, eventually leaving this world with his footprint in history.
Ages: Recommended for ages 6 and older.
