Theatre Guild at the University of Adelaide presents THE CRUCIBLE by Arthur Miller, directed by Geoff Brittain at the Little Theatre, The Cloisters, University of Adelaide from Saturday 6, Tuesday-Saturday 9-13 & 16-20 August 2016 at 7.30pm.

When fear becomes truth, reason is abandoned.

Reeling from the wild allegations of a group of teenage girls, a small god-fearing Puritan community is hit by a wave of uncontrollable social paranoia. The existence of witches rapidly becomes a real belief and when farmer's wife Elizabeth Proctor is arrested, it seems the madness must surely stop.

But with hysteria waging, the answers must be sought as to whether the girls' diabolical possession is a malicious deceit, or whether The Devil really is afoot. Who will have the courage to look The Devil in the eyes and face the truth alone?

Set against the backdrop of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692/93, Arthur Miller's powerful drama is both a gripping historical play and a timely parable of contemporary society and is considered to be one of America's finest works, winning the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play.

Director Geoff Brittain said "The Crucible is a play I've always wanted to direct because it is an exploration of the human psyche and behaviours that make it an enduring masterpiece. It continues to effect audiences by allowing them to see how dark desires and hidden agendas can be played out, whether it be the 17th century or now".
