Billys New Grandma
The smash hit musical 'Billy Elliott' has a new cast and amongst them is the superb actress Diane Langton.
Ms Langton has an amazing list of productions behind her in the West End.

She was in the London cast of 'Pippin'. She was the original Petra in 'A Little Night Music' at the Adelphi.
She sang 'What I Did For Love in A Chorus Line' at Drury Lane. The Monty Norman revue, 'Songbook' at the Globe.
'Two Gentlemen Of Verona' at the Phoenix.
'Evita', 'Chicago'- original London cast and current revival.
'I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road' at the Apollo.
Angel in 'The Rink'. Bird seed seller in 'Mary Poppins', Vic Nichols in 'Spend Spend Spend'. She has appeared in many comedies and drama pieces across the UK too including the West End revival of 'Steaming'.

Know on TV from such hit series as 'The Bill', 'Eastenders', Heartbeat' 'Only Fools And Horses' & 'The Rag Trade'.

She will bring her great comic skills and all round song and dance skills to the part of Grandam- time for another visit from me I think!

Joining existing cast member Genevieve Lemon as Mrs. Wilkinson from Nov 29th 2010, are:
Martin Marquez as Dad.
Tom Lorcan as Tony.
Chris McGlade as George.
Kay Milbourne as Billys Dead Mum.
Kevin Patricks as Mr. Braithwaite.

A little young, compared to Ann!

Now, Mama, here's your chance to air your love for 'The Rink', I feel!

LOL, as if you didn't know!

Ms Langton is 63 which surprised me, so not really that young to play the grandma!

Thats a pretty impressive CV of top West End shows over the years. I saw do all of those except 'Two Gentlemen' and 'Pippin'.

She understudied and played for 18 months. I saw her at a midweek matinee and after Stephanie Lawrence she is the best Eva I've ever seen.

She replaced Barbra Dickson in 'Spend Spend Spend' at the Piccadilly only to be told at the end of her first week the show would close in 3 weeks time! However, Ms Dickson saw Ms Langtons performance and said to her 'ah, so thats how its supposed to be done' - very true, she gave a far superior performance to Barbara's.

I didn't realise Ann Emery was leaving - what a superb performance she has given over the years.

I too would have thought Diane was too young for the role, but I saw her in A Chorus Line and The Rink, and loved her on the OLCs of Night Music and Songbook; so a good reason to go back and check out one of my favourite West End musicals.

She did 'Follies' at the Shaftesbury for a few months when they were doing a lot of guest appearances.

She also did Mrs Lovett somewhere but I cant for the life of me remember where?

I didn't realise Ann Emery was leaving - what a superb performance she has given over the years.

I saw her on my second visit to the show last week, after being disappointed by her understudy the first time, and I have to agree - wonderful performance, authentic in the same way that Alison Steadman was in Enjoy, though obviously this part is much less substantial, a cameo really. But her "Grandma's Song" is brilliant, hilarious and moving at the same time.

Rumour is that she's going into the musical version of A Private Function next year, presumably in the Liz Smith role. Eighty years old and still starring in new musicals! Amazing woman, she was lovely at the Q&A after Billy Elliot as well.

Am sad to hear that Ann Emery is leaving. What a wonderful part for her which she has played brilliantly. I first saw her during previews and many times since including earlier this year. Good to hear she has something else lined up.

Diane Langton seems a good choice. I remember her for The Rink from quite a few years ago.

Oh God, Diane Langton as grandma - now I feel old!

I loved her in The Rink and (if I'm not mistaken) Side By Side By Sondheim at the Donmar Warehouse.

Which part did she play in Follies? I know she did the Royal Festival Hall production but wasn't aware she did the Shaftesbury.

This would have been her latest West End venture but it never happened.

Who did she play in 'Follies'? It wasn't Phyllis- that was Millie Martin.

Was it Stella? 'Who's That Woman?' Thinking about it now, Julia M was not an obvious Sally-type, was she?

Anyway, Diane was also in 'Windy City' and was outstanding. 'Billy Elliot' gives her a chance to return to the Vic Palace!

Thanks Dev, yea she was Stella BUT it was during her 'bad' period- she suffered really bad for a number of years with drugs and drink. She missed more performances than she played

She was amazing as a brassy prostitute in 'Windy City' and had a stunning number called You Can talk to Me at the end of which she threw herself, literally, out of the window of a Chicago skyscraper!!!

She must have done it for a very short time as she isn't in any of the programmes (I have them covering the period of the Shaftesbury run. They only list Lynda Baron, who began the run, who was suceeded Meg Johnson, who completed the run. Maybe she was holiday cover?

I think you must have been seeing things Mama! I collect Follies memorabilia and have complete sets of programmes, posters , flyers so your comment (about Langton and other guest stars) sent my collecting OCD into overdrive. The Cam Mack archivist, hwo I know, has confirmed that Diane Langton did not appear in the Shaftesbury production )not even as holiday cover). They didn't have guest stars either - really just 2 casts the original (with Hope Jackman joining very quickly) and the replacement (with Jill Martin taking over from McKenzie apart from the final couple of shows for which Julia McKenzie returned).
