'Woman in Black' Announces Japanese Language Version

Parco in association with PW Productions presents the Japanese language version of Woman in Black for five special performances. Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the novel by Susan Hill, Woman in Black is directed by Robin Herford with design by Michael Holt and lighting by Kevin Sleep. The play stars Haruhiko Saito and Takaya Kamikj.

Woman in Black, one of the most exciting, gripping and successful theatre events ever performed, has just celebrated its 7,500th performance, and next year will be heading into its 20th year in the West End. It has also become a huge global hit. Robin Herford first directed a Japanese version in Tokyo in 1992 where it instantly became a cult. It has been performed in Japan regularly ever since.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the commencement of diplomatic relations between the UK and Japan, and as part of the 20th anniversary of Woman in Black in the West End, leading Japanese theatre producers Parco are bringing the Japanese language version of Woman In Black to the Fortune theatre for 5 performances only.

The production will feature two of Japan's best known and most highly regarded actors:

Takaya Kamikaya is one of the most highly acclaimed actors in Japan for his performances in theatre, TV and film. He made his debut in 1995 in the drama Daichi-no-Ko and went on to appear in numerous television and film roles for which he has won many awards. His stage work has also earned him the reputation of being one of the finest young actors in Japan.

Haruhito Saito is one of the most highly acclaimed actors in Japan. His career has spanned numerous theatre productions as well as television and film appearances. He has also published three books. He has been involved with Woman in Black since it first appeared in Japan in 1992.

Producing company Parco is a leading figure in young and cutting edge culture since the 1970's. It is well known for their fashion department store business, publishing and theatre businesses. They own a theatre in Shibuya in central Tokyo in which they have produced plays by Neil Simon, Alan Ayckbourn, and Martin McDonagh.
