This summer Watch This Space presents...August Outdoors in partnership with American Exoress, a pop-up mini-festival of free outdoor entertainment at The National Theatre.

The line-up includes pop-up music, a pop-up gallery, pop-up dance and pop-up children's' theatre for the month of August in the square between the NT main entrance and The Shed.

Fri 2 August

The Sneakers and The Streetlights - Half Human Theatre 1.10pm & 6.30pm

Foot-stomping, high-octane, knockabout, rockabout renditions of rock 'n' roll, 60s classics and 70s ballads as you've never heard them before.

Sat 3 August

Streetlights/Sneakers - Half Human Theatre 1pm & 6.30pm

The Thinker - Stuff & Things, 2pm, 4pm & 6.45pm

Vernon Ponder is a human telepathic transmitter. A scientific marvel, Vernon's every thought - mundane, matter of fact or miraculous - is heard by all around him.

Fri 9 August

H2H - Joli Vyann 1.10pm & 6pm

'Hand to hand' fuses dance, circus and theatre into a dramatic and dynamic performance examining how we support each other physically and emotionally. Four modern characters move hand to hand whilst exposing the fragility of human relationships.

Sat 10 August

Screeving - Urban Canvas 1-3pm & 5-7pm

Come and help create a massive temporary work of art in the Square, using a 500 year old chalking technique (screeving) with artist's pastels, pavement chalks and a lot of imagination.

Pigeon Poo People - The Natural Theatre Company 1pm, 3pm & 6pm

Are they bird-like people or people-like birds? Either way, something has really hit the fan.

Fri 16 August

Capses - Laitrum 12-3pm & 4.30-7.30pm

An interactive installation which places the audience in the role of puppeteer or spectator. The puppeteer receives random instructions through headphones, while the spectator hears a detailed narrative of a familiar tale; despite no direct communication, both share a uniquely intimate and magical theatrical experience.

Fri 23 August

Bang On! 1.10pm & 6.30pm

Make some noise for an energetic junk percussion duo banging on a giant drum kit made from recycled rubbish to create funky beats and rhythmic treats.

Sat 24 August

Caravania! - The Bone Ensemble 12pm-6.30pm

Children aged 5-11 and their adults are invited to enter the caravan and enter the micronation of Upper Caravania to play on the beach, journey into space, daydream a little and pay a trip to the chemical loo - which turns everything blue!

The Hot Potato Syncopators 1.10pm & 6pm

Total Eclipse of the Head - Ella Good and Nicki Kent 1pm -7pm

Enter the mobile salon in a caravan for an interactive musical hairstyling experience. Choose your tracks and pop on the headphones while you receive the appropriate hairstyle from the 'Kate Bush Bush' to the '80s Power Mullet Montage'.

The Caravan Gallery 1pm - 7pm

Within a mustard-coloured 1960s caravan, take a wry look at the British and their peculiar ways through Jan and Chris' all-seeing lenses.

Curious Curios - Kazzum Theatre 1pm, 3.30pm & 5.30pm

Come and marvel at Professor H Jones' weird and wonderful museum (actually in his garden shed) and see the curious objects he has discovered including the Dodo Doodoo, a shark with a hammer for a head, and 'Derek': the missing link between teddy bear and doll.

The Preeners - Canopy Theatre 2pm, 4pm & 6.30pm

The ornithological and raucous Mrs Preener wants to see her New Romantic (peacock) son Graham settle down with a nice bird, but the dandifiEd Graham has other ideas... 'Springwatch' meets 'Blind Date' circa 1985.
