University Women In The Arts Announces New Partnership With Sphinx Theatre Company

University Women in the Arts has announced a new partnership with Sphinx Theatre Company who will be joining the project as one of the project's partners and supporters.

The new partnership will include a special University Women in the Arts event with Artistic Director of Sphinx Theatre Company Sue Parrish, who will also be joining the project as one of the 16 women leading the way in the arts in the UK who have agreed to be mentors.

The University Women in the Arts event will take place on Saturday November 4th at 11am - 12pm at The Hampstead Theatre Studio.

Tickets are free and the event is open to any female arts student or woman wanting to work in the arts.

Sue will offer advice to women wanting to work in the arts and discuss the future of a diverse cultural landscape.

Jennifer Tuckett, Director of University Women in the Arts, said: "We are delighted to be working with Sphinx Theatre Company and Sue Parrish. Sphinx has led the way in the UK in terms of advocating for women in theatre for over 40 years and we couldn't be more thrilled to be working with them to provide access to advice for women wanting to work in the arts and address why more women study the arts but less women work in the arts".

Sue Parrish, Artistic Director of Sphinx Theatre Company said: "I am delighted to be given this great opportunity to discuss women's representation with new members of the artistic community and to join such a super band of colleagues."

The one off University Women in the Arts scheme was set up to address why more women study the arts but less women work in the arts, particularly in artistic and leadership roles. Last year's UCAS figures showed 63% of arts students in the UK were female, but Tonic Theatre, British Theatre Consortium and Freeland Foundation figures have shown only around 30% of female playwrights, directors and artists are female.

Other University Women in the Arts mentors include Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director of The Royal Court Theatre, Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of The English National Ballet, Jude Kelly, Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre and founder of the Women of the World Festival, Joanna Prior, Managing Director of Penguin Books, Amanda Foreman, academic, writer and presenter of the BBC series "The Ascent of Women", Kate Rowland, founder of BBC Writersroom and the former Creative Director of New Writing at the BBC, Anne Edyvean, Head of BBC Writerroom, Kate Bryan, presenter of "The Art Show", "Portrait Artist of the Year" and "Landscape Artist of the Year", Lucy Kerbel, founder of Tonic Theatre, Pinky Lilani, founder of the Women of the Future programme, and others.
