University Women In The Arts And Sphinx Theatre Company To Offer Advice To Female Arts Students On Dealing With Harassment

University Women in the Arts and Sphinx Theatre Company will offer free advice to female arts students on how to deal with harassment and bullying in the arts industry, following the recent case involving film producer Harvey Weinstein.

The advice will be part of University Women in the Arts and Sphinx's joint event at The Hampstead Theatre on November 4th.

The event will also offer advice to any woman wanting to work in the arts on managing their career and making their way in the arts industry.

Jennifer Tuckett, Director of University Women in the Arts said: "The recent cases involving Harvey Weinstein and others have shone a light on abuse and harassment taking place in the arts industry. Many of these cases have involved women beginning their careers in the arts industry. As such, we want to use our November 4th event with Sphinx Theatre Company to offer advice on how to deal with, and eliminate, bullying and harassment in the arts industry, as well as offering more general advice to women wanting to work in the arts".

There will also be a special small group session at 1pm for female arts students or recent graduates who would like to be involved in drawing up a mentoring pack for universities across the UK to use to mentor female arts students on how to deal with bullying and harassment in the arts industry.

The one off University Women in the Arts scheme was set up to address why more women study the arts but less women work in the arts, particularly in artistic and leadership roles. Last year's UCAS figures showed 63% of arts students in the UK were female, but Tonic Theatre, British Theatre Consortium and Freeland Foundation figures have shown only around 30% of female playwrights, directors and artists are female.
