The Old Vic Marks 100 Years of Women's Suffrage in Britain With ONE HAND TIED BEHIND US and SYLVIA

The Old Vic announced that Maxine Peake will curate One Hand Tied Behind Us, a One Voice performance of specially commissioned monologues to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act, which granted the first women in Britain the right to vote.

One Hand Tied Behind Us are six brand new monologues, written in response to the anniversary, which will be presented in a one-off performance at The Old Vic on Sunday 11 March following International Women's Day. They will explore key moments in the history of women's rights in the UK and look forward to the future of the fight for equality. Writers will include Peake, with further writers and casting to be announced.

As previously announced, The Old Vic will also be marking this anniversary year with Sylvia, the world premiere of a modern musical opening on 6 September with previews from 1 September. Sylvia combines dance, hip-hop, soul and funk, shedding a new light on a remarkable story at the heart of the women's suffrage movement.

Co-written by Kate Prince and Priya Parmar with original music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde, Sylvia is a modern musical celebrating the life of Sylvia Pankhurst, her pivotal role in the campaign for women's rights and the price of the passion and politics that tore her family apart. Sylvia is co-produced by The Old Vic, Sadler's Wells and ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company co-production, and co-commissioned by The Old Vic and 14-18 NOW.

The Old Vic celebrates its bicentenary on 11 May 2018. To mark 200 years of creative adventure, Artistic Director Matthew Warchus has programmed a season of world premiere productions, culminating in the production of Sylvia.

The One Voice series, funded by the TS Eliot Estate, continues this theme of creating pioneering, fresh new work which, inspired by the past, responds to the issues of today. Further One Voice performances coming up in 2018 will include monologues to mark the 70th Anniversary of the birth of the NHS and 100 years since the end of the First World War.
