Ruth Gemmell (Fever Pitch, Deborah Dean EastEnders) joins the cast of Harold Pinter's masterpiece Betrayal on the Crucible stage from tonight 17 May until Saturday 9 June.

Pinter's 20th play, Betrayal was written in 1978 and first performed at The National Theatrethat same year. It won the Laurence Olivier Awards for Best New Play in 1979 and is now critically regarded as one of Pinter's major dramatic works.

A heartbreaking comment on love and relationships, Betrayal is thought to have been inspired by Pinter's seven year extra marital affair with BBC TV presenter and journalist Joan Bakewell. It follows the lives of Jerry and Emma, as they reminisce about times gone by. After a seven year affair, their final meeting brings to light the destructiveness of their betrayal and how a single moment in time would change the lives of everyone around them forever.

Ruth Gemmell plays Emma. Her theatre credits include Sixty-Six Books, Helter Skelter / Land of the Dead (Bush Theatre), Death and the Maiden, Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Salisbury Playhouse), Coram Boy (National Theatre) and Macbeth, King Lear and Midwinter (RSC). For television, her work includes Dancing on The Edge, Inside Man, The Fades, EastEnders (series regular), Primeval, Trial and Retribution and Five Days; and for film, Offender, Storage 24, Good and Fever Pitch.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Juliet Aubrey has left the production of Betrayal.

Tickets for Betrayal are on sale now from Sheffield Theatres' Box Office, priced from £10.00 - £23.00. Call 0114 249 6000 or visit sheffieldtheatres.co.uk to book.
