A new work by writer Alex Martinez that delves into the mind of a man haunted by fears that he may be a potential child abuser is to receive its world premier at Hackney Empire this spring.

Eric Godber is a decent man plagued by a shocking obsession. As its power over him becomes increasingly irresistible, a woman fights to help him break free. The action is a battle of wits between a white middle-aged professional and a younger black therapist. To penetrate the walls of protection that Eric has built around himself, Dr Chase pushes them both to the limit - a provocative line of attack that threatens to unleash a violent reaction.

Private Thoughts is a starkly honest examination of a man on the edge. Whilst he is terrified that he will act on what is in his head, his confidante is set on getting him to open up and to identify what is at the root of his obsession. Can thoughts alone be dangerous, and when do the things inside one's head become unacceptable?

Written by Alex Martinez, son of anti-Franco novelist F M Ortas and father of comedy actress Francesca Martinez, and directed by Kevin Hely (co-founder with Conor McPherson of Fly by Night Theatre Company), the play stars Kevin McGowan and Clara Onyemere.
