This category has only three nominees, but is it as close as the numbers would indicate?

The Sound of Music was the Open Air Theatre's big crowd-pleaser, with Charlotte Wakefield as a lively and very young-looking Maria and Michael Xavier as a charming Captain.

Marti Webb returned to a role she created three decades ago in Tell Me On A Sunday - a limited run at the St James Theatre and a brief transfer to the Duchess Theatre.

But the favourite must be Maria Friedman's directorial debut, Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along - a hit at the Menier Chocolate Factory, and much feted after its transfer to the Harold Pinter Theatre. With a cast including the likes of Damian Humbley, Mark Umbers and Josefina Gabrielle, it even got immortalised on film with a cinema release.
