Musical Theatre Writer and Former Student of Stephen Sondheim Stephen Clark Dies

According to a tweet from long-time friend and writing partner, Howard Goodall, librettist, lyricist, and playwright Stephen Clark died yesterday morning while in the hospital.

Clark is probably best remembered for writing the lyrics to the Olivier-nominated Love Story, as well as plays Stripped (Stephen Jefferson Award), and Takeaway. After studying at Oxford under the tutelage of Stephen Sondheim, Clark's first musical was Eyam, which told the story of a Derbyshire village in 1665 suffering from the plague. Eyam ran at The Old Fire Station and Bridewell Theatre.

Clark's recent projects included a reimagining of Carmen Jones called Carmen La Cubana, which opened at the Théâtre du Châtelet earlier this year, and the musical Mu-Lan, whicH Clark was in the process of writing at the time of his passing.
