The West End's most glamorous musical, La Cage aux Folles, will officially close on January 2nd 2010 after more than a year in the West End. The show's original Albin, Douglas Hodge, will bring the show to a close prior to a planned Broadway transfer next year. He will reprise his Olivier Award winning role from November 30th and will be joined by Denis Lawson as Georges, who played alongside him when the production first opened at The Playhouse Theatre in October 2008. Current stars John Barrowman and Simon Burke will finish on November 28th.

La Cage aux Folles proved an enormous hit with audiences when it opened at the Menier Chocolate Factory at the end of 2007. All tickets for the run sold out in advance of opening night. Due to popular demand, the production was reconceived for The Playhouse Theatre where it opened on October 20th 2008 and was extended several times. The production was nominated for seven Laurence Olivier Awards, winning for Best Musical Revival. Douglas Hodge was named Best Actor in a Musical for his turn as ageing drag queen Albin. Denis Lawson was also nominated for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Georges.

The original production of La Cage aux Folles opened at the Palace Theatre on Broadway on 21st August, 1983 where it became the biggest new American musical of the decade. It ran for 1,761 performances and won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book of a Musical. The show's song I Am What I Am became an instant hit in the pop charts and was recorded by a variety of artists, including Gloria Gaynor and Shirley Bassey.
