Matthew Seager’s deeply affecting and celebrated play In Other Words returns to London prior to a UK tour, in an enhanced production six years on from its acclaimed premiere and subsequent international success. A powerful love story, In Other Words explores the transformative power of music to help reconnect those living with dementia to their loved ones and the world around them.

The production is directed by Andy Routledge, with its playwright Matthew Seager reprising the role of Arthur alongside Lianne Harvey as Jane, the character she played in the digital production. Success since the 2017 premiere of In Other Words at Islington’s Hope Theatre has included productions in Scotland, Ireland, Malta, and France – where, as Oublie Moi, it is transferring for an extended run and national tour after winning four prestigious Moliére Awards including Best Play (Private Theatre). The digital production was also integrated into the Higher Educational training resources of dementia charity Playlist for Life. 2024 will see its development into a French language feature film and further productions planned in Canada, Italy, and the Czech Republic.

Acclaim for the original production (Hope Theatre, 2017 and touring, 2019) includes:

  • ‘outstanding for the skill and simplicity with which it uses the power of theatre to achieve this profound identification between characters and audience’ 4 stars, The Scotsman
  • ‘a moving depiction of enduring love... quietly heart-breaking’ 4 stars, The Stage
  • ‘a beautiful, emotionally charged love story… right there at the very top’ 5 stars, The Upcoming
  • ‘heart shattering...a stunning showcase of love, compassion and intimacy’ 4.5 stars, The Reviews Hub
  • ‘profoundly touching. The play is vibrant even in its darkest moments’ 4 stars, BroadwayWorld
  • ‘a cleverly structured piece and a deeply affecting love story’ British Theatre Guide
  • ‘masterly devised… a deeply romantic story with a firm grip on your heart' 5 stars, Plays To See

Matthew Seager: “Whilst at university, I facilitated sensory stimulation workshops in a care facility as part of an applied theatre module. I witnessed first-hand the utterly transformative power music can have on those living with dementia. I was totally floored by my experiences and can reflect ten years later how they genuinely changed the course of my life. It speaks to the universality of the play’s themes - of dementia and music but also of love, compassion and companionship - that it continues to resonate all over the world. Indeed, I have never experienced a more profound connection between the performers and audience. It’s a privilege to be able to bring this updated version of In Other Words to life and I truly cannot wait to share Arthur and Jane’s love story with as many audiences as possible.”

The 2023 London run and UK tour is in partnership with Music for Dementia, a charity working with over 200 organisations in the music and dementia, health and social care sectors, to champion the value of music for people living with dementia. The campaign leads the music elements of the 2023 ‘Thank You Day’ celebrations. Matthew Seager and TBC Productions are facilitating Thank You For The Music Fest, which will bring choirs of young people together with groups living with dementia to sing songs of personal music.

Sarah Metcalfe, Managing Director of The Utley Foundation and Music for Dementia: “We’re delighted to be supporting In Other Words during the next part of its journey. This fantastic show is brilliantly written and performed and aligns perfectly with the work of the Music for Dementia initiative. The accuracy and care with which it handles such an important topic whilst still offering lightness and genuine hope is essential and exciting.”
