EDINBURGH 2010: BWW Reviews: DINOSAUR PLANET
It didn't take much to get me to see Dinosaur Planet. I'm a sucker for anything that promises both dinosaurs and robots in the same piece.
As a show, it's very low-tech - it consists of MJ Hibbert and his guitar, Steve Hewitt, and a range of basic props and accents. But to be honest, that's all they really need to tell the quirky story of a group of (slightly) incompetents trying to save the world against an invasion of dinosaurs and then robots. Both from space.
The songs are catchy, the jokes are slightly silly but funny, and in general it's entertaining. Some of the humour is quite witty, many of the jokes are ones your dad would be likely to tell, and you can tell that both of them take a keen, geeky pleasure in speculating about a planet full of dinosaurs.
While the show is rather low concept, the style works as long as that's what you go in expecting. Even though there were some parts when the material floundered, in general their enthusiasm and their obvious enjoyment in performing makes up for any weaker moments.
If a couple of guys with a guitar, a number of hats, aluminium foil robot heads and a number of theories about how dinosaurs would survive in space sounds good to you, then Dinosaur Planet should be on your list of shows to see.
