BWW caught up with The Hairy Godmothers to chat about bringing Dizney in Drag: Once Upon A Parody and WET to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about the two shows you’re taking to the festival this year.

Dizney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody is a hilarious, nostalgic comedy musical (yes, we sing everything live), that takes fairy-tale favourites and twists them on their head. You follow a hero’s quest to find their one true love guided by a very unlikely mentor, The Hairy Godmother.

WET  is a cathartic comedy cabaret with heart. The five female-identifying individuals from The Hairy Godmothers dive deep into the themes of what it is to be a woman through original songs, hilarious comedy, sassy and heartfelt dance, unique poetry and so much more. You'll be wet in all the right ways.

Just to be super clear, Dizney in Drag is *not* for children, right?

That's right, please leave the kids at home, this is definitely a fairy-tale for adults!

Do you think you know what to expect from the Edinburgh Fringe?

We have heard the stories! It’s creating a mixture of excitement and nervousness for us but we’re prepared to not have a lot of sleep for a month with all the interesting things to do, see and be a part of. We actually were planning on coming over for Edinburgh Fringe in 2020 but then COVID hit, so it’s been a long time coming, now we’re living the fairytale to actually make it happen.

Why do you think your shows need to be seen right now?

They are two very different shows, although they both ultimately aim to both educate and entertain. Humour can be de-armouring and charming, so we use it as a way of diving into some big and interesting topics, especially ones that people don’t talk about openly or publicly!

The feedback that we’ve had from audience members has been the most rewarding and a reminder that there’s something in both shows for everyone. So if you’re slightly curious come be our guest!

What would you like audiences to take away from them?

I won’t spoil the main message for Dizney in Drag, I’ll let you come and see for yourself but let’s say that inclusivity and being curious can take you far in life, so bring more curiosity and compassion into your life.

For WET, whether your male, female, undefined, anything in between or outside of the box there’s something in this show that you will relate to. This show will make you laugh and pull at your heartstrings at the same time, so the main take-away would be an appreciation for the large array of human expression and compassion for human nature.
