David Hunter, who reached the semi-finals of Andrew Lloyd Webber's search for Jesus, is to star as John Tallentire in an all new production of the multi award winning musical, The Hired Man.

Based on the much-loved novel by Melvyn Bragg and featuring music by EMMY, BRIT and BAFTA award winning composer, Howard Goodall, The Hired Man is arguably the finest new British musical of the last thirty years.

Set against the backdrop of the CumbrIan Lakes in the early years of the twentieth century, it tells the timeless, moving story of a young married couple and their struggle to carve a living from the land, just as the traditional rhythms of English country life are being swept away by the gathering storm of war in Europe.

Director Daniel Buckroyd, has reassembled the creative team behind his critically-acclaimed 2008 touring production, which captivated audiences throughout the UK before transferring to New York.

Alongside David Hunter, whose credits include Seussical and One Man, Two Guvnors, the production also features Julie Atherton (Mamma Mia, Avenue Q, Sister Act) and Kit Orton (Spamalot, Spend Spend Spend).

The Hired Man plays at The Colchester Mercury from March 21st - April 6th and The Leicester Curve from April 12th - 27th. For more information and tickets, visit www.mercurytheatre.co.uk (Colchester) or www.curveonline.co.uk (Leicester).
